Gansu Tao Inkstone, namely Taohe Green Stone Inkstone, is one of the famous inkstones in China. The production of Tao Inkstone began in the Tang Dynasty and was popular in the Song, Ming and Qing Dynasties. It has a history of more than 1,300 years. Tao Inkstone is green in color and elegant in shape. It is hard and fine, as bright and smooth as jade. It releases ink quickly without damaging the brush hair, and can store ink for a long time without drying up. It has long been famous at home and abroad and is a treasure among the four treasures of the study. Taohe Green Stone is produced in the canyon around Lama Cliff at the junction of Zhuoni County, Lintan County and Min County in the middle reaches of Tao River in southern Gansu Province. The Taohe mining belt is surrounded by water on three sides. The inkstone stone is nourished by moist air for many years. The stone is hard, moist and fine. The light green contains dark green stripes, forming natural textures such as flowing water, clouds, ripples and mist. The inkstone made of it can be made into beads because of its moist stone. The ink is released quickly and finely, and the ink is shiny. The ink stored in the inkstone will not dry up or rot for months. Tao inkstones are mainly divided into regular-shaped inkstones and natural-shaped inkstones. The inkstone body consists of three parts: the ink pool, the water pool and the inkstone cover. According to the style, there are two types: single-piece inkstones and double-piece inkstones. The surface of the inkstone is often decorated with patterns and texts. The most representative traditional patterns are dragons and phoenixes and primitive religious objects. Tao inkstones are handmade, and the production process generally includes more than a dozen processes such as material selection, blank making, hollowing, fine carving, and glazing. The carving is mainly openwork and relief, supplemented by various techniques such as line carving and round carving. The patterns are quaint and beautiful. Tao inkstones have rich cultural connotations and strong local characteristics, and have high artistic collection value. In recent years, due to the decreasing natural resources and slow economic development in remote areas, the production skills of Tao inkstones are facing development difficulties. The relevant departments need to pay attention to it and take practical measures to rescue and protect it.
