Ancient Songs of the Huayuan Miao Nationality
Miao ancient songs are an ancient oral literary form of the Miao people. Their contents include the creation of the world, wars and migrations, customs and habits, production and labor, myths and legends, love stories, love songs and rituals, funeral torches, Miao medicine, and astronomy and philosophy. There are two forms of the spread of Miao ancient songs: oral performance and manuscript circulation. Miao ancient songs have a long history. From the ancestors of the Miao people, Sanmiao, Guansu, Nanman, Wulingman, to the Miao people in the Song Dynasty, they have always regarded it as their own "encyclopedia" and widely circulated it, and it is well-known to everyone. During the ten-year catastrophe of the "Cultural Revolution", its handwritten copies and square Miao records were burned to ashes, but the Miao people still quietly preserved it in the form of folk oral transmission. Miao ancient songs are widely circulated in Huayuan County, Jishou City, Fenghuang County, Baojing County, Guzhang County, Luxi County of Xiangxi Tujia and Miao Autonomous Prefecture, as well as in Guizhou, Chongqing and Hubei, which border it. Located in the Wuling Mountain area, the remnant of the Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau, the area is full of mountains and dense forests, with a relatively backward economy and a relatively closed environment, which has become the soil for the development of folk literature. Miao ancient songs are of great value to the study of the ancient history, politics, economy, religion, philosophy, literature, art, sacrifice, medicine, agronomy, astronomy, folklore, military and ethnic migration of the Miao people. As the most important cultural heritage of the Miao people, Miao ancient songs have practical significance in strengthening national cohesion and building a harmonious society.
