🎧  Listen to Introduction

"Dongdongtui" is popular in Tianjing Village, Silu Village, Gongxi Township, Xinhuang Dong Autonomous County, Hunan Province. It is named "Dongdongtui" because it is performed with the sound of "Dongdong" (drum sound) and "Tui" (a small gong with a protruding sound in the middle) during the performance. The origin of "Dongdongtui" is difficult to trace. The earliest residents of Tianjing Village were Dong people with the surname Long, who moved from Jingzhou in the province in the 17th year of Yongle in the Ming Dynasty (1419). People with the surname Long said: "The head of 'Dongdongtui' is in Jingzhou and the tail is in Tianjing." Based on this inference, this Nuo opera is likely to have been introduced from Jingzhou in the Ming Dynasty. In the old days, Tianjing Village had a Pangu Temple and a Feishan Temple. During the Spring Festival, each temple would take turns to offer sacrifices once a year, and "Dongdongtui" must be performed during the sacrifices. "Dongdongtui" is also performed during natural disasters or plagues. "Dongdongtui" has a simple dance plot, and some of it is a Nuo opera with the embryonic form of drama. All the singing is in the Dong language. Its repertoire includes "Dancing on the Land", "The Leper Stealing the Cow", "The Old Man Pushing the Cart" and other plays that reflect the life of the ethnic group; there are also Three Kingdoms plays with Guan Gong as the protagonist, such as "Guan Gong Catching Diao Chan" and "Ancient City Meeting". The music of "Dongdongtui" is mostly developed from local folk songs and folk songs. Common tunes include [Liuliuqiang], [Shiyinqiang], [Yinsongqiang], [Leige] and so on. When singing "Dongdongtui", all characters wear masks. The commonly used masks are called "Jiaomu", and there are 36 of them. The performance of "Dongdongtui" is carried out in the dance. The actors' feet are always in step with the "gong and drum beats", stepping on the triangle and jumping non-stop. According to the old artist, this dance of stepping on the triangle is based on the body of the cow. The cow's head and two front feet form a triangle, and the cow's tail and two hind feet form another triangle. It is the farming culture of the Dong people that gave birth to "Dongdongtui". In 1949, all the masks of "Dongdongtui" were lost. Since then, they have been replaced by temporary paper masks or face makeup when singing. In 1992, the local people remade the masks and restored the original appearance of "Dongdongtui". In recent years, "Dongdongtui" has attracted widespread attention at home and abroad. Experts from Japan, South Korea and other countries have visited it many times and gave it high praise. Long Kaichun Long Kaichun joined the Dong ethnic group Nuo opera troupe in February 1948.
