Sanxi Land Boat Rowing

🎧  Listen to Introduction

"Dry boat rowing" is a traditional folk song and dance form widely spread in various parts of Yangxin County, especially in Sanxi Guohe and Hongqing. It is said that it originated from the dragon boat race on the water in ancient Sanxikou during the Dragon Boat Festival to commemorate Qu Yuan. Because the water of Sanxi River was abundant in the past, the dragon boat race was also prosperous. Later, the water of the river gradually dried up, and it was replaced by rowing on the dry boat in the late Qing Dynasty. A dry boat team consists of 25 people. In a large dry boat more than 15 feet long with a bamboo pole structure and red cloth, there are ten sailors holding oars on each side, and a rower practicing singing in front. In the middle stands a young female holding a gong and a public beating a drum. A clown boatman steering the rudder is added at the stern, forming a real dragon boat. The music is accompanied by the strong beats of gongs and drums. The young female and the public take turns to lead the singing, and the sailors sing the labor songs in the form of upper and lower sentences. The whole performance is compact, inspiring, and passionate. This unique folk song and dance form is often performed on various festivals and is deeply loved by the local people.
