Yangqiang Mulian Opera
Gaochun Yangqiang Mulian Opera has a long history and is the oldest opera in my country. It originated in the Yuan Dynasty. The Liujialong Opera House in Gucheng County was built in the first year of Yuan Yanhu (1314), which can be used as a side evidence. It developed in the Ming Dynasty, became popular in the Qing Dynasty, was interrupted by the Taiping Heavenly Kingdom War, and was revived in the late Qing Dynasty and the Republic of China. It declined in the middle of the last century. From its formation to its peak, Yangqiang Mulian Opera has a development process of more than 400 years in Gaochun. As a religious drama, the origin of Gaochun Mulian Opera is even older. Taoism and Buddhism have a long history of popularity in Gaochun. There were temples in the late Eastern Han Dynasty, especially in the Tang and Song Dynasties. In the Southern Song Dynasty, Taoists may sing Mulian Opera when performing Taoist rituals. According to the "Gaochun County Chronicles" in the seventh year of Guangxu, in the Southern Song Dynasty, the City God Temple Fair was held on the 18th day of the fourth lunar month. "No matter how much money was spent, the performances were performed to please the gods, and the first one must be selected to be the fastest." It reflects the grand occasion of folk drama activities in Gaochun. At the same time, the annals also record that there were more than 250 nunneries, temples, and shrines of various sizes in Gaochun during the Qing Dynasty. There were clan shrines in every village. Among them, large temples held temple fairs every year, and there were also mass Buddhist activities such as the Menglan Festival, the Blood Basin Festival, and the Guanyin Festival. When holding these activities, one of the main contents was singing Mulian Opera. There were also many opera stages in Gaochun. Until 1949, there were more than 20 opera stages and countless straw stages in Gaochun. At present, the county still preserves provincial cultural relics protection units such as Liujialong Opera House, Dongba Opera House, and Cangxi Opera House. (No pictures yet, welcome to provide.)
