Shaoxing Nursery Rhymes
Shaoxing nursery rhymes are songs that are spread in Shaoxing, the center of the ancient Yue land, and its surrounding areas, and are mainly sung by children. They are an important part of the treasure house of Chinese folk literature. At present, there are about 400 nursery rhymes widely circulated in Shaoxing, covering a wide range of topics, mainly game nursery rhymes, teaching nursery rhymes, narrative nursery rhymes, etc., expressed in various forms such as tongue twisters, riddle songs, counting songs, chain songs, acronym songs, inversion songs, question-and-answer songs, etc. Shaoxing City is located in the central and northern part of Zhejiang Province. It is famous at home and abroad for its unique geographical environment, long history of development, profound cultural heritage, and rich cultural expressions, which provide sufficient nutrients for the breeding and development of nursery rhymes. Shaoxing nursery rhymes have a long history. Fan Ye of the Southern Dynasty's "Book of the Later Han Dynasty: Biography of Zhang Ba" contains "Kuaiji Nursery Rhymes": "Throw away my halberd, give up my spear, the thieves are gone, and the officials are all at rest." Chen Shou of the Western Jin Dynasty's "Biography of the Elders of Yidu" also contains "Kuaiji Nursery Rhymes", which is a song with the same title but different text of "Kuaiji Nursery Rhymes". In the Qing Dynasty, Wu Chisheng (from Kuaiji) compiled the "Guangtianlai Collection", which included 23 Zhejiang children's songs; Fan Yin of the Qing Dynasty compiled the "Yueyan", which included 55 Shaoxing children's songs. From 1922 to 1923, a total of 69 Shaoxing children's songs were recorded in the "Illustrated Children's Songs" and "Provincial Children's Songs Collection"; from 1928 to 1934, Lou Zikuang published "Shaoxing Ballads", "Yue Songs Hundred Songs" and Tao Maokang founded the "Folk" series, which recorded a large number of Shaoxing children's songs; in the early years of the Republic of China, Zhou Zuoren collected children's songs in Shaoxing, and later joined the Peking University Ballad Research Society, published "(Shaoxing Children's Songs) Preface" and many other articles, and collected 223 Shaoxing children's songs and included them in the "Children's Song Research Manuscript". The above activities have established the important position of Shaoxing children's songs in the folk literature circle. Shaoxing children's songs are numerous and rich in content; they have a long history and a wide influence; they have strong regional characteristics; and they have various forms of expression. The words are simple and concise, and the language is humorous. They have positive significance for the intellectual enlightenment, moral education, and literary cultivation of children. The nursery rhymes in the nursery rhymes enrich the entertainment methods of children and promote their healthy growth imperceptibly. Since the 1980s, Shaoxing has organized a large-scale ballad survey, which has recorded Shaoxing nursery rhymes in a relatively complete way. To this day, Shaoxing nursery rhymes are still widely sung in Shaoxing and surrounding areas through word of mouth from generation to generation. In recent years, Shaoxing City has carried out research and protection of nursery rhymes, published many books such as "Yuedi Nursery Rhyme Games", established nursery rhyme research bases, and carried out popular teaching in primary and secondary schools, which has expanded the influence of nursery rhymes and promoted the inheritance of nursery rhymes. In December 2014, it was included in the fourth batch of national intangible cultural heritage list.
