Ningbo Sing News

Zhejiang
🎧  Listen to Introduction

Singing news is a popular song in eastern Zhejiang, especially in Fenghua, Beilun, Zhenhai, Yinzhou and Xiangshan. Singing news has a long history, dating back more than a hundred years. In the Southern Song Dynasty, blind people sang "morning reports" (official news), which later evolved into singing social news. The content of the news is mostly ancient and modern stories and popular tunes circulating in the streets and alleys of the local area, and is sung in local dialects and slang. When singing, the artist holds a drumstick and a gong piece in his right hand, a small gong in his left hand, and a small drum on his knees. While singing, he rhythmically hits the drum shell or small gong with a drumstick or gong piece. The singing forms include: 1. Singing at the door, that is, singing a few songs at the door, similar to begging; 2. Singing in the courtyard, singing a paragraph or a scene in the public courtyard, and collecting some money; 3. Singing on the boat, which is more popular in the water network area, singing on the boat day and night; 4. Singing on the lantern, singing at temple fairs and markets; 5. Singing in the venue, this is a relatively high level of folk artists who can sing big books, and they go to the bookstore to sing, but there are not many of them. Most of the news is sung by one person, and there are also duets. The accompanying instruments include drums, small gongs, and bamboo boards. News bibliographies can be divided into two categories: one is a small bibliography, also called an opening book, such as "Bachelor's Tune", "Health Preservation", "Touring the Wharf", etc., and there are also social news sung in a small tune. The other is a large bibliography, also called a family book, including "Three Counties Combined Trial", "Dismantling Mandarin Ducks", "Nailed Shoes", etc. Singing News has been included in the "Ningbo Quyi Chronicle" published by Ningbo Publishing House in 1998 and the "Selected Works of Ningbo Traditional Quyi" (Comprehensive Quyi Volume) published in 2006.
