Ningbo opera is a local opera sung in Ningbo dialect, belonging to the singing and speaking Tanhuang vocal style. It was first called "chuanke". In 1890, after the "chuanke troupe" performed in Shanghai, it was called "Ningbo Tanhuang". After 1924, it was called "Siming Wenxi". After the fashion drama was staged in 1938, it was called "Yongju" and "Improved Yongju". It was not until 1950 that this type of opera was officially named "Yongju". Ningbo opera is suitable for performing Qing Dynasty costume dramas, Western suits and cheongsam dramas in the 1930s, and modern dramas. It has rich musical tunes, mainly "basic tunes" and "Siming Nanci" tunes evolved from rural field folk songs, folk songs, and singing news, and "fast Erhuang" and "slow Erhuang" brought from the Luantan troupe, as well as some local minor tunes. The "basic tune" is mainly used to narrate the story, the tune of "Siming Nanci" is mainly used to express the emotions of the characters, the "Erhuang" is mainly used to depict high-pitched and passionate emotions, and the minor tune is used to express special scenes and emotions; in the past 50 years, the blending of mutual transfers has also been used to form a variety of comprehensive tunes. The earliest distribution area of Ningbo Opera was mainly in Yinxian and Fenghua, and then gradually spread to Ningbo and towns around Zhoushan. After liberation, Ningbo established the Ningbo Opera Troupe, and Shanghai established the Jinfeng Opera Troupe. The performance areas are mainly concentrated in Ningbo, Shanghai, Zhoushan and other places, and extend to the surrounding areas, south to Taizhou, west to Lishui and Jinhua, and north to Hangzhou, Jiaxing and Huzhou. At present, the only professional performance group of Ningbo Opera is the Ningbo Opera Troupe.
