The gold-lacquer statue-making technique of Mount Tiantai is a mysterious traditional handicraft that has long been used by Tiantai folk artisans and has been passed down for more than 2,000 years. Mount Tiantai is the birthplace of Buddhism and Taoism, the ancestral home of the Southern School of Taoism, and the birthplace of the Tiantai School of Buddhism in China, Japan, and South Korea. It has made significant contributions to the gold-lacquer statue art at home and abroad. The "gold-lacquer statue-making technique" is exquisitely crafted. It is a special craft that can comprehensively reflect the sculpture art, gold foil craft, lacquer craft, and painting. It is an intangible cultural heritage of Zhejiang Province. Historically, it is recognized as "a treasure of national statue art" and "a unique Chinese art". Since the Eastern Jin Dynasty, Mount Tiantai has adopted the gold-lacquer statue-making technique. After more than a thousand years of inheritance and development, the gold-lacquer statue-making technique, a unique handicraft school, was formed in the Tang and Song Dynasties, and matured in the Ming and Qing Dynasties. Master Jianzhen of the Tang Dynasty spread the gold-lacquer statue-making technique of Mount Tiantai to Japan and carried it forward in Japan. The Five Hundred Arhats and other Buddha statues in the Eight Outer Temples of Chengde during the reigns of Emperor Kangxi and Emperor Qianlong of the Qing Dynasty were made by several generations of gold-lacquer sculpture artists from Mount Tiantai. Since the art of gold-lacquer sculpture in Tiantai was only passed down from master to master, it has not been able to form a large-scale production in history. In addition, the constant wars made people's livelihood difficult, and gold-lacquer artists changed their professions, making this art on the verge of being lost. In the 1960s, the gold-lacquer sculpture art scattered among the people and on the verge of being lost was excavated and sorted out. At the same time, the method of combining "gold-lacquer wood carving" with "Tiantai Mountain dry lacquer and hemp method" was used to give this ancient traditional art a new life.
