Gold lacquer painting, commonly known as "gold painting", uses Fujian's famous lacquer and high-quality gold foil as basic materials. The wood board or bamboo to be decorated is repeatedly coated with "lacquer", then "matte lacquer", and after repeated polishing, "matte lacquer" is used to depict various pictures such as figures, animals, flowers, landscapes, etc. on the surface, and finally gold foil is applied. It is mostly used to decorate wooden components of temples and palaces, and antique wooden furniture. It has the characteristics of dazzling brilliance and long-lasting color. Due to the excellent lacquer and superb lacquer art, it has a good protective and decorative effect on the objects being painted. On August 28, 2007, Dongshan gold lacquer painting skills were approved by the Fujian Provincial People's Government to be included in the second batch of provincial intangible cultural heritage list of Fujian Province. Dongshan Island has been one of the important trading ports in southern Fujian since ancient times, and has close cultural exchanges with overseas. During the period when Chen Yuanguang was in charge of Zhangzhou in the Tang Dynasty, the Central Plains culture was continuously introduced to Dongshan, and then spread from Dongshan to Taiwan and even overseas. In modern times, with the prosperity of culture and art, the art of gold lacquer painting has made great progress and has become a unique work in traditional folk art. In Dongshan Guandi Temple, the precious works of Mr. Ou Meishan, a famous Dongshan gold lacquer painting master, are still preserved. Mr. Ou Meishan only passed on his art to Xie Shaoyi, who has become the only inheritor of this traditional craft.
