Henan
🎧  Listen to Introduction

Yueshan Bajiquan originated in Boai County, Henan Province. It was founded by Cang Gong, the second-generation abbot of Yueshan Temple, in the 25th year of Dading in the Jin Dynasty (1185). It was spread to surrounding areas in the early years of Yongle in the Ming Dynasty. It has a history of more than 800 years. By the 16th year of the Republic of China (1927), Yueshan Bajiquan had been passed down by 24 generations of monks. During the Anti-Japanese War, Yueshan Temple was destroyed by war. Ma Liansheng, a lay disciple of Yueshan Temple from Luqiao Village, Boai County, opened a Baji martial arts school in his hometown, which has been passed down to this day. Yueshan Bajiquan has simple and simple movements, fierce and violent, and powerful momentum. It uses the short to control the long, and is both offensive and defensive, with emphasis on practicality. The rescue and protection of Yueshan Bajiquan has important reference value for the study of the basic context of the development of traditional Chinese martial arts, the relationship between Chinese martial arts and economic and social development, and the inheritance and development of Henan's local culture and Buddhist culture. Although there are now people practicing Bajiquan all over the country, and even in the UK, the US, Germany, the Netherlands, Japan and Southeast Asian countries, many boxing manuals, boxing techniques and boxing skills are on the verge of being lost as the old boxing masters gradually pass away, and they are in urgent need of better protection.
