Xihe Opera, also known as Danqiang Opera, is a classical opera. The lower reaches of Ganjiang River are divided into two rivers, East and West. The Xihe River Basin directly governs Xingzi, De'an, Yongxiu, Jiujiang and other counties. This place was once the popular place of Yiyang Opera and Qingyang Opera in the Ming Dynasty. During the Jiaqing period of the Qing Dynasty (1796-1820), a group of opera troupes specializing in Danqiang Opera spread from Nanchang and were active in De'an and Yongxiu. The famous De'an artist Tang Dale sang opera in Nanchang Luantan Troupe and Hubei Han Troupe successively, with superb skills and high reputation. During the Daoguang period of the Qing Dynasty (about 1845), the temple of the ancestor of opera, Lewang, was built in Chenjiawan, De'an County. Together with his brother Tang Darong, he organized the Tangjia Opera Troupe in Tangjiaban, Gaotang, his hometown. Around the Daoguang and Tongzhi years, he went to Tangjia Village, Xingzi, recruited apprentices and taught art, and established the first Danqiang Opera Troupe in Xingzi. In 1874, Xingzi artist Zhou Zixiu served as the head of the troupe and named it "Qingyang Princess Xingyi Yihe Troupe". The troupe mainly sings Erfan and Xipi. In addition to performing in Xingzi, it often travels to Yongxiu, De'an, Jiujiang, Duchang and other lakeside areas. In 1910, the Xingzi Yihe Troupe was expanded into two troupes in the north and south, and many talents emerged, reaching its peak. That year, the troupe participated in the county temple fair competition many times, and eleven old people won awards and plaques fourteen times. Wherever the Yihe Troupe went, "everyone talked about it with relish and was very happy." The lives of all famous artists were recorded in local epitaphs, which became a grand event in the art world. The traditional repertoire of Xihe Opera mostly performs historical stories such as the Three Kingdoms, Sui and Tang Dynasties, Water Margin and Yang Family Generals. There are 24 volumes of Three Kingdoms Opera, 40 volumes of Sui and Tang Dynasties Opera, 15 volumes of Yang Family Generals Opera, and 13 volumes of Water Margin Opera. One volume of opera performance lasts for six or seven hours. The music of Xihe Opera is mainly Xipi Erfan, and it also sings high-pitched tunes, fishing drums, mountain songs, folk tunes, etc. The traditional roles of Xihe Opera are divided into ten roles: one is Mo, two is Jing, three is Sheng, four is Dan, five is Lao, six is Wai, seven is Chou, eight is Tie, nine is Xiao, and ten is Za. Because they play the leading roles in the robe and belt opera, the four roles of Mo, Lao, Wai, and Jing are the pillars of the troupe. In traditional performances, there is a position of "reporter" on the stage, and the actors sing and recite with the help of the "reporter", which is very similar to the form of puppetry. Some experts believe that this is the legacy of ancient meat puppets.
