Wuyuan Hui Opera, an ancient opera in Jiangxi, is a branch of Anhui Hui Opera in southern Anhui. With Wuyuan County as the center, it is popular in Fuliang, Leping, Poyang in northeast Jiangxi and Kaihua in Zhejiang. In the 55th year of Emperor Qianlong's reign in the Qing Dynasty, after the four major Hui Operas entered Beijing, the Laoqingsheng, Caiyun, Tongqing and Dayangchun Operas founded in southern Anhui were called the four Hui Operas outside Beijing. In the third year of Jiaqing, Cao Zhenyong, a Wuyuan native, returned to his hometown to worship his ancestors and brought the Anhui Hui Opera Hualian Opera to Wuyuan. During the Guangxu period, the four major Hui Operas outside Beijing took root in Wuyuan one after another and traveled to all towns and villages in the county. According to incomplete statistics, from Emperor Qianlong to the Republic of China, more than 30 Hui Operas have performed in Wuyuan, and the largest class has more than 180 people. There was a saying about the voice of Wuyuan Hui Opera that "first sing the old shipai, then sing the bangzi tune". That is, Shipai tune was first introduced from Anqing, and then the Bangzi tune of southern Anhui was sung. Later, it absorbed Kunqiang, Gaoqiang and Pihuang opera, and was influenced by Leping and Dexing Raohe troupes. Wuyuan Huiban Gaoqiang, Tanqiang, Kunqiang and Huaya were combined. The vocal styles of Wuyuan Hui Opera include Yiyang Opera with drum accompaniment and human voice, which is used in the performances of "Journey to the West" and "Mulian", and Huizhou Opera with small gongs and small drums for rhythm. In traditional operas, there are more Kun Opera and martial arts operas, which are played with suona and flute, which are very different from Su Kun Opera. The plectrum and gaohu are used to support the tune, and the bangban is used to hit the board. The tunes are high-pitched and passionate. The plays include "Appeal to the Emperor" and "Gungu Mountain". Chui Opera is accompanied by sea flute and has graceful and melodious tunes. The plays include "Wulong Courtyard", "Qi Shuanghui" and "Baihua Presenting the Sword". Xipi Opera has a complete style, and the plays include "Hongmei Mountain" and "Yin Yang Realm". Erhuang Opera is dignified and solemn, and includes "Shuang Jinzhong", "Baguatu", "Ganlu Temple", "Sanku Hall" and "Hujia Village". Siping Opera is often used with Erhuang, also known as Erhuangping. Bangzi Opera is accompanied by banhu and is used in more literary operas. Kunyi Opera, the main music is mostly qudi, and occasionally suona. It not only retains the qupai system, but also forms the prototype of the blowing tune, reflecting the transition from the linked tune to the board tune. The repertoires include "Bo Ya Visits a Friend" and "Zhaojun and the Barbarians". Flowery tunes, singing Tanzhu and Nanci, the repertoires include "Niao Huadeng", "Da Huagu" and "Luo Huchuan". Hui Opera is rich and colorful, and both refined and popular people can appreciate it. There are more than 300 traditional repertoires left today, most of which are pihuang and blowing. Wuyuan Huiban once had strict traditional opera customs. Every time they performed in a place, they would hold a ceremony to invite gods to come in and watch the opera: in the old days, Wuyuan Huiban still had the custom of "breaking the stage". For any new stage, a Taoist ritual had to be performed the day before the performance. Five large bowls are placed on the incense table on the stage, each containing an egg. The main beam is hung with red ribbons. Five actors play the five gods of the east, south, west, north and center, holding torches, dancing with iron hairpins, chains and wooden signs, and jump onto the stage to smash the eggs in the bowls. Then an old man wearing a Bagua robe and a Taoist hat waves his sword in all directions and draws talismans on the wall. Then a female role wearing a red python and stilts steps on tiles and dances to get promoted. Afterwards, Wang Lingguan comes on stage, holding a golden whip in his left hand and a torch in his right hand, setting off fireworks at the exit door, making the stage red and spectacular. Finally, a Jing role plays Jiang Ziya and sings "Weishui River", wishing the Zhou Dynasty 800 years of entrepreneurship, to show that the ancestral hall and stage will last for thousands of years, the family will be forever solid, and the village will be blessed with longevity. The rules of "breaking the stage" are complicated, and the atmosphere is serious and solemn. These rituals are all relics of the performance of Yiyang Opera Mulian, with a long and ancient tradition. Wuyuan County Hui Opera Troupe was established in 1956. It has collected more than 490 traditional scripts, more than 80 tunes, and 52 facial makeups, preserving a number of precious cultural heritages, and enabling them to be inherited and developed. In 2006, it was included in the list of national intangible cultural heritage. Veteran artists Jiang Xiang'ao and Jiang Yumin were named representative inheritors of national intangible cultural heritage projects.
