Play Kirin
Playing with the unicorn is a folk art project in the first batch of representative projects of intangible cultural heritage at the municipal level in Lianyungang. The unicorn is a "benevolent beast", "auspicious beast" and "holy beast" in the legend of the Chinese people. It is a legendary auspicious animal. Playing with the unicorn is a good wish for the Guanyun area to pray for auspiciousness in the new year, longevity and prosperity of the population. Playing with the unicorn lasts from the first month of the first lunar month to the fifteenth day of the first lunar month. There are several groups singing in a village every day. It is really "one after another", which is very lively. The unicorn is made of bamboo strips or reeds to form a skeleton, decorated with colored paper and painted with red and green. Some people also make a little man riding on the back of the unicorn, which means that the unicorn will give birth to a child and is pleasing to people. Some little men hold small cymbals in both hands, with a mechanism. One end of the mechanism line is held in the hand of the man carrying the unicorn. When he plays the cymbals, his hand moves and the little man also plays the cymbals, which is very funny. A unicorn playing team usually consists of 5 people. One person came to the door to ask for money. He is called "the one who fights the fence". 4 people beat gongs and drums. The one who beats the cymbals carries the unicorn, and the one who beats the big gong is the starter of the singing. The tune they sing is a special unicorn tune, which uses a micro-tuning style, with four sentences of introduction, development, transition and conclusion, and a sentence of gongs and drums, and then repeats the last sentence. After singing each paragraph, they beat the gongs and drums for a while, and the length depends on the situation. Every time they arrive in a village, they sing from door to door, and the content is also varied, covering everything from ancient times to the present, both at home and abroad. Sometimes they improvise according to the audience and the situation of the farmers. For example, if they see a house with a hanging corridor, they sing "The gongs and drums are beaten in rows, and the colorful hanging corridors are hung up. Scrape inside to give birth to a noble son, and scrape outside to make a fortune." When they see a hanging porch hanging on someone's door, they sing "The gongs and drums are beaten in rows, and this hanging porch is hung up. Although it is not a priceless treasure, it blocks the cold wind from coming in." The scene evokes emotions and is humorous and interesting. The regular fixed lyrics include "December Flower Wind", "The Birth of the Unicorn", "Eighteen-year-old Ancient Man", etc. When the two groups meet, they take turns to compete to see who can sing more pieces. "Tang Wang Parade", "Yang Family Generals", "Wang Sanjie Picking Vegetables", etc., can be sung from Pangu creating the world to the present day. Sometimes new lyrics are created, and the party's policies and new ideas are promoted, with rich and colorful content. In the past, people's cultural life was boring, and watching Qilin during the Spring Festival was a great pleasure for the old, young and old. Some people who play Qilin do it for hobbies, and some can also make money. In the 1950s, most people asked for steamed buns and shared them among several people when they got home. After the 1970s, they gradually changed to asking for money. In recent years, as people's material living standards have improved, they don't care about this little profit. At the same time, there are more forms of cultural entertainment. Playing Qilin is rare. Occasionally, a group will go to the village to sing, and it still attracts old, young and old to watch and listen, and their interest is not diminished. (No pictures yet, welcome to provide.)
