The fingerboard pipa making technique is a traditional handicraft item in the first batch of representative items of municipal intangible cultural heritage in Lianyungang. Pipa is a plucked instrument with rich expressiveness among Chinese folk instruments. It is made of hard woods such as sandalwood and mahogany into a semi-pear-shaped fingerboard, and a paulownia panel is placed on it to form a resonance box. Bamboo products are installed on the panel as the tone position, and four strings are strung. The sound is produced by picking with "artificial nails", and the resonance box vibrates due to the strings passing through the panel and the sound column. The making materials and the structure of the instrument directly affect the timbre, sound quality and volume of the instrument. A good pipa has a bright and solid sound similar to metal. Xu Shicheng was originally a pipa accompanist of the Huaihai Opera Troupe of Guanyun County. In his long-term playing practice, he felt that the timbre of the pipa was difficult to achieve the ideal effect. He has been exploring improved methods for pipa making. After many experiments, a new pipa style fingerboard pipa was created. In practice, Xu Shicheng found that the center of the lower position sound board of the pipa is easily pressed by the left hand that presses the string, and the sound board's sound and resonance are suppressed, which easily leads to "dead sound". Moreover, the traditional pipa directly arranges the frets on the panel, and the sound is also suppressed, making it difficult to play a metallic, bright, crisp tone, and the wood taste is heavy. The fingerboard pipa adds a piece of rosewood or mahogany fingerboard to the board according to the width and narrowness of the frets. There is a distance of about 2 mm between the fingerboard and the panel, and the frets are placed on the fingerboard. The sound is transmitted to the panel and the sound box through the strings and the sound column. The panel vibration is not suppressed, and the sound is bright and sharp in the thick, and the "metal sound" is prominent, which greatly improves the timbre and sound quality of the pipa.
