According to the Suzhou Tong'an Chronicles: A long time ago, there was an ancient well in the Lotus Temple, in which a snake demon who specialized in devouring humans and animals hid. Every year on the 30th day of the seventh lunar month, the snake demon hidden in the ancient well would spit out a long red tongue on the water surface, winding it into the shape of a lotus, luring ignorant and kind men and women to sit on the lotus and ascend to heaven and enter paradise. When people sit firmly on the "lotus", the "petals" slowly roll up, swallowing the living person into the snake's belly and burying him in the snake's belly. Kind people do not know the mystery, but spread "sitting on the lotus" and "ascending to the fairyland" more and more. More and more people want to sit on the lotus. Even those who have no chance to sit on the lotus are proud to see the spectacular sight of mortals ascending to heaven. Therefore, every time it is the day to sit on the lotus, people from all directions come to "roll around". This is the grand occasion of the "rolling lotus" temple fair that has continued for thousands of years. The story of "sitting on a lotus, going to heaven, becoming an immortal, and ascending to paradise" was heard by the mother of Wang Zhuangyuan, a Suzhou scholar at the time. The old lady also wanted to "transcend the mundane world and be reborn" and sit on a lotus, so she asked her son Wang Zhuangyuan to do it well. On July 30 of that year, Wang Zhuangyuan came to the temple to watch the "sitting on the lotus". He saw that when the lotus shrank, the person sitting on the lotus was swallowed up and sank to the top of the head. Suddenly, his face was full of pain and two lines of regret tears. Wang Zhuangyuan understood the reason. On July 30 of the following year, everyone wanted to see the lively scene of the lady's ascension to heaven. The time for "sitting on the lotus" has come! The presiding monk stood on the altar under thousands of lights and beat the bells and drums. The "lotus core" in the center of the ancient well rose slowly, bloomed, and slowly spread out close to the water surface. What a bright lotus! It looks exactly like the lotus at the feet of Avalokitesvara. Many people in the crowd praised loudly, "The Madam is blessed with great fortune." When the Madam was about to step up, Wang Zhuangyuan grabbed his mother's hand and said, "Mother, wait a moment. I will carry the gift for you first." Then he ordered the attendants to carry the three bags of "gifts" onto the lotus. When the three bags of "gifts" were placed on the lotus, the lotus seat shrank back as soon as the attendants left. However, the lotus shrank into the water and swayed faintly. Not long after, the pool water splashed, as if there was a foreign object rolling and tossing, which frightened the audience and made them retreat to avoid it. Then there was muddy water and a foul smell. After a while, the well water gradually calmed down. On the muddy water, a giant python with a head like a basket, eyes like copper bells, and a body like a roller lay horizontally. Its stomach burst open and it died. The crowd was so shocked that they were speechless. At this time, Wang Zhuangyuan told them what he had observed last year. It turned out that the lotus seat was a snake that harmed people. Wang Zhuangyuan's three bags of gifts were all quicklime. After throwing them in, the snake was blown to death, eliminating future troubles and getting rid of a harm for the people. From then on, everyone was grateful to Wang Zhuangyuan for cleverly eliminating the harmful goblin and breaking the superstition. The lotus-rolling temple fair was also preserved. In addition to commemorating Wang Zhuangyuan's elimination of harm for the people, it also commemorates those who died from superstition of sitting on lotus.
