Baihuazhou Dragon Dance
Dragon lantern dance is a traditional dance item in the fifth batch of representative items of Suzhou's municipal intangible cultural heritage. Dragon lantern dance activities are held all over the country, and the modern dragon lantern dance in Suzhou is closely related to Baihuazhou. In the late Qing Dynasty, on the 12th day of the second lunar month, there was a Baihua Temple Fair in Baihuazhou, Suzhou City. In 1905, a group of local rickshaw workers, sedan chair workers and other laborers initiated and organized the Baihuazhou Dragon Lantern Team. They first borrowed the wooden dragon head from the candle shop to dance at the temple fair. Later, because the wooden dragon head was too heavy, they used bamboo and cloth to make a cloth dragon in the shape of a wooden dragon. It was light and flexible and easy to dance. At that time, the dragon lantern team had two dragons, one big dragon with 17 sections and the other small dragon with 9 sections. The team members were physically strong and skilled, and the dragon lantern team became famous after dancing. Since then, the Baihuazhou Dragon Lantern Team has come out to dance on every traditional folk festival, and their dance performances have been continuously improved. They have been passed down from generation to generation to this day, and have an impact on the entire city and its surrounding areas. The dragon lantern used in dragon dance is usually made of bamboo and wood to form a dragon-shaped skeleton, covered with cloth and paper, painted with scales, with a "round bead" in the dragon's mouth. The whole dragon body has 17 sections and is 35 meters long. There is a wooden handle under each section for the dancer to hold. The sections are like joints and can be moved. When dancing the dragon lantern, one person holds the handle of each section of the dragon body. The dragon head and tail are the most difficult to hold and need to be danced by experts. Including the person dancing with the dragon bead, each dragon lantern requires 18 people. When dancing, accompanied by drums, gongs, cymbals and other percussion instruments, the actors either bow and arrow steps, shuttle steps, or kneel steps, turn their arms and twist their waists, move and jump, and form different formations with the changes in steps and the swinging of their arms up and down and left and right. Only when everyone cooperates can the dragon lantern dance up and down, wander and soar, and perform various dance postures such as "crossing in the middle", "dragon turning over", "half turning over", "returning dragon", "two dragons playing with pearls", "big dragon coiling around small dragon" and "kneeling dragon", adding to the festive atmosphere. At night, lighted candles are installed in the dragon's body, and the dance is even more fascinating and wonderful. Baihuazhou Dragon Lantern Dance, while showing the dragon's fierceness and strength, also has a gentle and kind demeanor, presenting the characteristics of Jiangnan, and has a certain artistic appreciation value. Dragon Lantern Dance is closely related to Suzhou's folk beliefs and customs, and records the customs and customs of the Jiangnan water town. It has historical and cultural value and academic research value. (No pictures available, please provide them.) (No pictures available, please provide them.)
