Gaohu Dragon Lantern Dance in Fuzhou, commonly known as "Dragon Lantern Dance", has a history of more than 1,000 years since the Tang Dynasty. There are six natural villages in Gaohu, Fuzhou, and each village has a dragon dance team commonly known as "Bashe". During the heyday of "Bashe" activities, even children aged seven or eight used straw ropes to make dragons and imitated adults to dance and play with dragons, so there is a proverb "Gaohu Dragon Lantern Children Playing with Straw". Gaohu Dragon Lantern Dance uses nine-section cloth dragons as props. One person dances with the dragon ball, and the other nine people each hold a dragon section. The first section (dragon head) and the second section are mainly "stepping", the eighth section dancers mainly "horizontal stepping" and "small staggering step", and the rest are "rubbing the ground step". The whole performance is directed by the dragon ball, the dragon head dances with the ball, and the rest follow each section, all in tacit cooperation according to the rhythm of gongs and drums. The dance routine has two major features: First, the formation changes are based on the symmetrical positive and negative "Tai Chi diagrams", and various complex changes of knotting (tying knots) and untying (untying knots), such as "left and right knotting", "dragon piercing holes to untie knots", "round plate turning belly to untie knots", etc., making the dragon lantern dance infinitely varied. Second, the movements emphasize "arm head falling" (i.e. the left and right sections of the dragon are drawn vertically up to the top of the head), "turning hands and swallowing sections" (i.e. the left and right hands switch positions and the hands push and slide). The coordination in the dance must pay attention to the dance methods such as "follow the previous section, look after the next section, do not push forward, avoid pulling back, have a quick eye, and dance smoothly". During the performance, the team members wear white sweat shirts, and still wear flat-cut pants on the lower body, a silk wide-brimmed belt around the waist, and white sneakers on the feet. The accompaniment draws on the [Ji Ji Feng] in the percussion music of the Fujian Opera and the commonly used gong and drum beats. What is more special is that during the Gaohu dragon dance performance, each person carries a cloth gift bag on his shoulder, called a "fragrant bag", which is used to store gifts and "red envelopes" (rewards). During festivals and festivals, the villagers will set off firecrackers to welcome the dragon lantern dance. When the "dragon lantern dance" team stops in front of the door to perform, the villagers will give the dancers "red envelopes" or gifts to express their gratitude. Some villagers will invite "dragon candles" (i.e. invite dragon lantern dance performances) to celebrate the birthday of the elderly or the birth of a son or daughter.
