Lantern making skills

Beijing
🎧  Listen to Introduction

Lantern making in my country has a long history and a wide variety of types. Zhang Lianyou, 74 years old, who is now a member of the Beijing Folk Artists Association and whose stage name is Zhang Mingliang, began to learn to make traditional lanterns from Dong Shihui, a former eunuch of the Qing Palace, at the age of seven. After seven years of study, he was able to make palace lanterns and various folk lanterns, and was called Lantern Zhang. Lanterns are commonly known as lanterns. The main tools for making them are saws, hammers, axes, carving knives, etc., and the main raw materials are wood, bamboo, silk, etc. The materials used to make palace lanterns are exquisite, the processes are complex, the craftsmanship is meticulous, and the production is rigorous. There are mainly wooden palace lanterns and bamboo palace lanterns. The palace lanterns are well-proportioned and beautiful in style. Folk lanterns are mainly used in various traditional festivals and folk celebrations. They are highly popular. Although the workmanship is not as exquisite as that of palace lanterns, they are novel in style, diverse in variety, and bright in color. They win by novelty. The main processes include baking, cutting, gluing, painting, polishing, etc. Common ones include revolving lanterns, lotus lanterns, wind lanterns, auspicious lanterns, and ground rolling lanterns. As an old Beijing lantern artist, Zhang Lianyou not only mastered the lantern making skills, but also had unique customs such as lantern hawking. As a lantern artist, he had to shout and sing along the street to sell lanterns, such as selling fruits, radishes, knife sharpening, etc., to attract people to come and watch and buy lanterns. And it is necessary to buy different lanterns for different festivals. The sorting and excavation of traditional lantern making skills has important historical and cultural reference value. Lanterns and their customs provide a reference for studying the development and evolution of folk activities and folk culture in Beijing, and have important folklore value; as a handicraft, it also provides a reference for studying the development of handicrafts in my country, and has important social value.
