Legend of the Phoenix
The legend of the phoenix is a folk literature project in the second batch of representative projects of Xuzhou's municipal intangible cultural heritage. The legend of the phoenix in Fengxian originated in the Spring and Autumn Period. Soon after Fengcheng was built, there were legends of "Phoenix falling into Fengcheng", "Phoenix crop", and "Phoenix eggs". By the time of Liu Bang's grandfather Liu Renhao, the legends of "Phoenix points at the cave, ants build graves" and "Phoenix falls from the parasol tree" were formed. According to the Ming edition of Fengxian Chronicles, "Fengxian is also known as Fengcheng, and the Phoenix crop is about ten feet high in the southwest corner of the city, with the left wing hanging in the southeast and the right wing in the northwest, each hundreds of feet long, which is why Fengcheng is named." Although the ruins of the Phoenix crop have gone through the vicissitudes of time, they still exist. According to the Fengxian Chronicles of the Guangxu Period of the Qing Dynasty, "On the first day of the fifth month of the fifth year of the Jin Dynasty (359 AD), a phoenix with nine chicks was seen in the west city of Feng. In the eleventh month, the Jiazi day came again, and a group of birds followed. There were more than ten mounds of earth on the Pao River in the northeast of the county that looked like phoenix eggs. In the second year of Zheng, the Yellow River entered the Pao River and the traces were wiped out. The phoenix crop was about nine miles around the old city of the county. It was three feet high in the west corner of the city, and more than four feet high in the southwest." The legend of the phoenix is widely spread in all towns and surrounding areas of Fengxian County, especially Fengcheng Town and Zhaozhuang Town, the hometown of Liu Bang, which are well-known to every household and children. Fengcheng was renamed "Phoenix City" because of the legend of the phoenix. It is said that Fengcheng was renamed "Dragon City" because Liu Bang was born there. When the dynasties changed, the word "dragon" of the previous dynasty was taboo, so it was called "Phoenix City" again. There is no doubt that it has been passed down to this day. There are five main stories about the legend of the phoenix in Fengxian County, which can be divided into three parts: The first part is the legend of the phoenix: When Fengcheng was newly built in the Spring and Autumn Period, a huge and beautiful phoenix landed in Fengcheng. To commemorate the place where the phoenix flew, later generations built the Fengming Pagoda in Fengcheng, a place where "the phoenix will not land without treasures". The legend of the phoenix shows that Fengxian County is a place of outstanding people and good fortune, and is an auspicious place that breeds dragons and phoenixes. There are existing sites such as the "Phoenix Crop" and the "Phoenix Crop Pagoda". The historical records can be found in the Ming edition of "Fengxian County Chronicles" and the Qing Guangxu edition of "Fengxian County Chronicles"; the second part is the legend of the phoenix and Liu Bang: including the three legends of "Phoenix Landing on the Wutong Tree", "Phoenix Pointing at the Acupuncture Point, Ants Building the Grave", and "Phoenix Crop and the Birth of Liu Bang", all of which happened before Liu Bang was born; the third part is the legend of the phoenix and Liu Yi.
