Taiping Qingshi in Menghe Ancient Village is a traditional dance item in the fourth batch of representative items of intangible cultural heritage in Changzhou. Taiping Qingshi in Gu Village, Menghe, is a traditional dance that combines fitness and entertainment. The dance began during the Southern and Northern Dynasties and has been passed down in the local area for more than 1,600 years. Initially, Qingshi was a skill used by the Xiao royal family to celebrate various festivals and perform at major events to reflect the royal style. When this skill gradually flowed from the palace to the people, Menghe, the ancestral home of the Xiao family, benefited first, and it has been settled in Menghe since then. By the end of the Song Dynasty, this Qingshi had evolved. Chao Zhengchu, an officer of the Chao family in Jiangyin, settled in the west mountain of Menghe with his family and soldiers, and took Gu Village as the name of their settlement. The Chao family came from the military, and after they settled down, they brought the lion dance from the military camp, which soon combined with the local Qingshi dance. Tired of the wandering life in the military camp, the patriarch of the Chao family named this fusion lion dance "Taiping Qingshi" in order to live a peaceful life. The Taiping Qingshi integrates the masculine spirit, military style and military power of the lion dance in the military camp into the local Qingshi dance, and has been refined, created and inherited by generations of the Chao family, and has been passed down from generation to generation in the Menghe area. In the old days, the Menghe Taiping Qingshi was generally performed during festivals or at temple fairs and related celebrations. Later, due to historical reasons, it was silent several times. In modern times, the restored Taiping Qingshi often appears and performs at various festivals and large-scale events. There are two basic forms of performance: one is to dance the lion while walking, which is used for outings at temple fairs or large-scale events to pray for blessings and auspiciousness; the other is to perform at various celebrations and ceremonies to set off the atmosphere. The main lion dance routines of Qingshi performances are "Four Open Doors", "Rhinoceros Looking at the Moon", "Double Lion Bathing", "Double Lion Walking on Plum Blossom Pile", "Double Lion Embracing Bridge Pier", etc. The entire lion dance action fully demonstrates the lion's firmness, majesty, bravery, and tenacity. At the same time, it also perfectly expresses the intimacy, playfulness, and other actions between a pair of blue lions, which constitutes a major feature of the Menghe Blue Lion. The lineup of the Taiping Blue Lion performance can be large or small. Because it is a high-intensity, high-art performance, it requires the actors to master superb skills. The instruments used by the Taiping Blue Lion are percussion instruments, including gongs, drums, cymbals, and chimes. The rhythm of percussion instruments during lion dance plays a role in guiding dance movements and interacting with the audience's emotions. In recent years, the Menghe Taiping Blue Lion has actively used carriers and frequently participated in various cultural activities in and around the local area. At the same time, it has absorbed and cultivated a new generation of people to join the performance team, so that it has been better inherited.
