Legend has it that the Da Lian Xiang dance in Shuyang is related to a girl named Lian Xiang during the Qin and Han dynasties. During the Qin and Han dynasties, there was a smart, lively, hardworking and beautiful farm girl named Lian Xiang in Shuyang. Once, she used bamboo to boil water and cook. When the bamboo burned in the fire, it made a crisp crackling sound with a very rhythmic sound. Lian Xiang listened to the sound and used a bamboo pole that was originally used to stir the fire to knock on the ground and her body, twisted her waist, and danced in front of the kitchen. After that, every time she cooked, she used the bamboo pole to knock on the ground and dance. Over time, she became very skilled in playing with a bamboo pole. She also compiled a routine to teach her good sisters. They often danced together by beating bamboo poles. It was not only entertaining and healthy, but also very comfortable when it hit the body, which had the effect of strengthening the body. Since there was no crackling sound of fire to accompany the dance, it seemed very monotonous. Lianxiang and her sisters dug holes at both ends of the bamboo poles and strung copper coins inside. In this way, when the coins were hit, they collided and made a pleasant sound. Later, everyone named this form after Lianxiang, "beating Lianxiang". It is said that Yu Ji, the famous wife of the King of Chu in Shuyang, also studied beating Lianxiang seriously and often performed for the King of Chu, Xiang Yu. Later, when Yu Ji followed Xiang Yu in the war, she spread this art form all over the country, and it became popular all over the country over time. The performers use Lianxiang to hit the shoulders, back, chest, elbows, waist, abdomen, buttocks, legs and other parts of the body. In the performance process over the years, the folk artists in Shuyang have continuously developed the beating of Lianxiang creatively, from one Lianxiang per person in the past to one person beating two Lianxiang (double Lianxiang). Lianxiang is also equipped with colorful silk and other ornaments, and the beating method is constantly innovating and changing. The works include "Da Lian Xiang", "Hua Bang Cao", "Hua Bang Wu" and many other kinds. There is no fixed costume for folk Da Lian Xiang, and most of them are costumes with ethnic characteristics. If it is a professional performance, most of them are uniform costumes in red, green and blue. Lotus Xiang made of bamboo poles is used as a prop. Da Lian Xiang dance is mainly spread in Zhouji Township, Beidingji Township and Shucheng Town in Shuyang County, and most of them are performed in villages in Zhouji Township.
