Paper-cutting flourished in the Ming and Qing Dynasties. At that time, paper-cutting had been closely integrated with local customs and habits and became a part of people's lives. The subject matter and style of paper-cutting have been preserved since the Ming and Qing Dynasties, without major changes, forming a unique style that is different from northern and southern paper-cutting. To this day, in all parts of Shuyang, all seasons, residences, clothing, births, weddings, funerals, and birthday banquets are reflected in paper-cutting. Shuyang paper-cutting has unique artistic characteristics. First, it is closely integrated with local folk customs and deeply rooted in the daily life of the masses. Whether it is a wedding, a child's full moon, an old man's birthday, or traditional festivals such as the Spring Festival, Lantern Festival, and Mid-Autumn Festival, people always use various forms of paper-cutting to decorate the front and back of the house, various furniture and supplies, add a festive and harmonious atmosphere, and express their expectations for a happy life. Second, the subject matter is mainly auspicious and festive patterns, and great attention is paid to the meaning of the pattern, "there must be meaning in the picture, and the meaning must be auspicious." Animal and plant themes with auspicious and festive meanings are often used, while human themes are rarely used. Decorative patterns with no specific images and pure textures are also common. Third, the style is unique. Northern paper-cutting is bold and rough, with exaggerated and simple shapes, and has the legacy of the Han Dynasty. Southern paper-cutting is complicated, delicate, and elegant, with realistic shapes, and is greatly influenced by modern art styles. The style of Shuyang paper-cutting is unique. In terms of plastic art style, it is similar to the decorative texture style of the Ming and Qing Dynasties, with strong decorativeness. The style completely retains the characteristics of traditional folk art, which is completely different from many so-called "modern paper-cutting" transplanted from painting art in modern times. Fourth, in terms of paper-cutting techniques, Shuyang paper-cutting is mainly yang cutting, supplemented by yin cutting. The area of removal and retention is basically half and half, which is a prominent feature. Fifth, in terms of use, it is mainly used to decorate houses and furniture during festivals. Common ones include window flowers, door stickers, wall flowers, ceiling flowers, lamp flowers, and tent flowers. Another major use of Shuyang paper-cutting is as an embroidery pattern, such as shoe toe flowers, fan flowers, pillow flowers, etc. Shuyang paper-cutting is distributed in all towns and villages in the county and has a good inheritance. It is mainly passed down by word of mouth and hands from generation to generation by rural women, reflecting the collective creative wisdom of the working people. According to preliminary statistics, there are more than 20 well-known paper-cutting inheritors in various towns and villages in the county, among which Lv Suxia from Beidingji Township, Shuyang County is a representative inheritor.
