Shouyang Paper Cutting

Shanxi
🎧  Listen to Introduction

Shouyang folk paper-cutting originated in the middle of the Yellow River Basin. It is an extremely ancient and primitive traditional folk art form in the birthplace of Yellow River culture. With the help of a small space, historical legends as content, and simple five-color paper as raw materials, it has created a large number of paper-cutting works. These works show the Chinese nation's courage to fight, love the country and family, and the strong and brave national spirit, and show the ancient mountain and river cultural accumulation of Shouyang. The raw materials of Shouyang Fushou paper-cutting are generally red paper or red rice paper, and the tools are paper twists, scissors (or carving knives) and painted patterns, or directly based on imagination and composition, stacked into five to six layers, and cut (carved) in one go. Shouyang paper-cutting has the characteristics of roughness, heaviness, and simplicity in the northern region. The themes of creation are mostly praying for happiness and longevity, and symbolizing auspiciousness. In terms of genre and format, it is composed and created according to local folk customs and practical needs. Representative works include "Old Longevity Story", "Legend of Fuhua Mountain", "Homeland of Fushou", "Eight Scenic Spots of Shouyang", "Twelve Zodiac Signs" and other series. Shouyang Fushou paper-cutting is an important part and communication carrier of Shouyang's "longevity culture", expressing people's expectations and longings for a better life, and has important cultural and artistic value.
