Redwood carving (Haian redwood carving) is an extension of the traditional art category of the fifth batch of representative items of Nantong's municipal intangible cultural heritage. Hai'an redwood carving uses wood from small-leaf red sandalwood to rosewood, from large-leaf red sandalwood to rosewood, and is finely crafted into daily furniture such as cabinets, cupboards, tables, chairs, beds, etc. It is a representative of Su-style furniture. Its specialty is that it abandons the bulkiness and heaviness of Cantonese-style furniture. The overall layout is exquisite, the style is novel and the illustrations are rich. The dragon and phoenix theme patterns are finely crafted, which is more royal than Hai-style furniture. Its exquisite craftsmanship lies in the unique anti-corrosion and anti-deformation techniques of wood, the mortise and tenon structure is self-contained, and the appearance treatment, especially the fine grinding, is unique. The square table with a bend is a representative, and the finished furniture can't even feel a trace of gap. There are also various cultural customs and rules of the master in redwood carving and woodworking operations, such as a thank-you banquet for entering and leaving the master's door, wood cannot be inserted upside down in the house, furniture cannot be rooted upward, square tables are single and not double, and the wooden lines of square tables cannot be horizontal when facing the door.
