🎧  Listen to Introduction

The red sandalwood carving craft has a long history. The unique wood carving skills of the ancestors were passed down to Tu Jie, forming a distinct regional characteristic and reaching a new artistic height. In the late 1980s, Tu Jie returned to China and established the Ming and Qing Red Wood Carving Art Research Institute. With the continuous development of the institute, it was upgraded to the China Red Sandalwood Culture Research Institute. With this as a platform, he pioneered the red sandalwood carving craft and root splitting carving techniques. Red sandalwood carving is a traditional carving craft based on red sandalwood, including relief carving, openwork carving, round carving, pasted carving, through carving, shallow carving, root carving, splitting carving, root splitting carving and other techniques. According to historical records, in the Ming Dynasty, our ancestor Tu Shiyu was proficient in wood carving and was described as "a great skill of the Ming Dynasty". In the late Qing Dynasty, our ancestor Tu Wenqing designed and made red sandalwood furniture in the "Zaobanchu" of the Qing Palace. He was a famous "Su-style" red sandalwood carving artist. Later, he returned to Suzhou to open a red wood workshop, create red wood furniture, and develop various types of wood-carved Buddha statues. In the Republic of China, the red sandalwood carvings created by my great uncle Tu Jingshu were exhibited in the first national art exhibition of the Ministry of Education of the Republic of China held in Shanghai. He opened a redwood workshop in the old city of Shanghai and was good at small pieces, especially red sandalwood. His father Tu Hanmin was a professor and doctoral supervisor at Harvard University in the United States and had great attainments in sculpture. When Tu Jie was young, he learned carving techniques from his father. The red sandalwood genes of his ancestors were inherited, innovated and developed in him. Over the years, he has devoted himself to creating more than 100 red sandalwood carvings, achieved remarkable artistic achievements, and enjoyed a high reputation at home and abroad. The 6-meter-high "Century Guanyin" is treasured by the Thai people and the royal family, which has enhanced the friendship between China and Thailand. The King of Thailand personally awarded the "Thai-China Friendship Special Contribution Medal"; "Teacher of All Ages" won the "World Cultural Peace Prize" awarded by the United Nations and is permanently collected by the United Nations; "Century Dragon Boat", which symbolizes national unity, is permanently displayed at the China Red Sandalwood Cultural Research Institute; "The Lord of the Poor" was welcomed by five monks from China and abroad and was invited to the Shanghai Jade Buddha Temple; "The Lord of Morality", which interprets Chinese culture and welcomes the 1000-day node of the World Expo, is enshrined in the Pudong Qinci Yangdian of the Millennium Taoist Temple. Tu Jie has written more than 70 papers on the theoretical research of red sandalwood carving technology, filling many gaps in the research of traditional craft history, and has made positive contributions to the inheritance, protection and development of red sandalwood carving technology.
