Nantong Palm Weaving
Nantong palm weaving is a traditional crafts project in the third batch of representative projects of Nantong's municipal intangible cultural heritage. Nantong palm weaving belongs to the category of leaf weaving. According to written records, it began in the Three Kingdoms period and has been passed down to the present day. It has a history of more than 1,700 years and is a unique folk art in my country. Palm weaving is mainly based on buckling, and it uses some weaving techniques in straw weaving and bamboo weaving. It is an artistic creation through tearing, pulling, winding and piercing, etc., pursuing the perfect combination of spirit, form and interest. Palm weaving uses palm leaves as raw materials to weave handicrafts. The materials are carefully selected and the production is highly seasonal. Palm silk is white, tender, soft, exquisite and practical, bright in color, able to bear weight and not absorb moisture. People mostly produce handbags in spring and autumn, and shoes and hats in summer. In early April, artists began to collect tender palm leaves, cut the leaves into fine palm silk with a needle, twist them into palm ropes, and make white and soft materials for use after sulfur fumigation, drying, soaking, drying and other processes, or dye some palm silk for use. The decoration method varies from object to object. (No pictures available, please provide them.) (No pictures available, please provide them.)
