Xindian Folk Songs
Xindian folk songs are a traditional music item on the first batch of representative items of municipal intangible cultural heritage in Nantong. The spread of Xindian folk songs is centered in Xindian, Rudong, and has expanded to Shigang, Chahe, Wuyao and other places in Tongzhou. Folk song tunes include "grass pulling folk songs", "plowing rice seedlings folk songs", "water cart songs", "fertilizer accumulation songs", "mud picking songs", "water pushing songs", "dog shit picking songs" and so on. From May to October every year, it is the peak season for singing Xindian folk songs, and farmers hum folk songs while working. When singing Xindian folk songs, there are "speaking voices" and "empty voices": "speaking voices" are the part with lyrics, and "empty voices" are the part without lyrics but only empty words. The locals sing folk songs and the sound can be heard for miles, so it is also called "Xindian Gaoqiang". During the summer solstice, people gather in groups of three or five to put together two tables to compete in folk songs, which is called "Bingtang Folk Songs". After the founding of the People's Republic of China, more than 60 Xindian folk songs have been collected, 16 of which have been compiled into the folk song collection of Nantong area, and more than 20 have been compiled into the "Collection of Chinese National Folk Songs, Jiangsu Volume".
