The legend of Dong Yong is a folk literature project in the first batch of representative projects of municipal intangible cultural heritage. Dong Yong was from Dongtang Village, Danyang, Jiangning (now Danyang Town, Jiangning). Danyang Ancient Town, once known as "the head of Wu and the tail of Chu" and "Jiangdang lock Yin", has a history of more than 2,000 years. The legend of the seven fairies descending to the earth originated from here. Now the place names and folk customs of "Seven Fairies Mountain", "Fan Mountain", "Seven Fairies Temple", "Stone Chair" and "Footprints" can serve as evidence. Dong Yong lived in Dongtang Village (five miles away from Danyang Town). His family was poor. He lost his mother at a young age. The father and son depended on each other and made a living by growing vegetables. Dong's father died of illness due to overwork. The honest and kind Dong Yong was poor and had no money to bury his father. He had to sell himself to Fu Yuanwai's family (Danyang Dafu Village) as a slave for three years to borrow money to bury his deceased father. The filial piety of the people moved the seven fairies in the heavenly palace, so they came down to earth and disguised themselves as common women. They met Dong Yong under the old locust tree and got married with the old locust tree as a matchmaker. Mr. Fu made things difficult for her in every way, but the seven fairies spun ten pieces of brocade in one night to redeem Dong Yong. From then on, the couple lived a beautiful life of "you watering the garden while I weave cloth". For more than two thousand years, the beautiful and moving legend of "Dong Yong and the Seven Fairies" has been widely circulated from ancient times to the present. Although the original structural model has not changed, the plot, character images and even ideological connotations have been continuously enriched and innovated, further enriching the cultural treasure house of the Chinese nation. In order to remember this beautiful legend, later generations built the "Seven Fairies Temple" and the "Seven Fairies Giving a Child to Dong Yong" white marble sculpture as the permanent symbol of Danyang Town, Jiangning.
