Xinjiang
🎧  Listen to Introduction

The Tajik wedding custom is an important ritual of the Tajik nationality, mainly spread in the towns and villages of Taxkorgan Tajik Autonomous County, Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region. It consists of procedures such as selecting relatives, proposing relatives, engaging relatives, beating drums to bless, welcoming relatives, wedding ceremony, and unveiling the veil three days after marriage. Each procedure has its own unique cultural connotation. For example, the ceremony of beating drums to bless reflects the Tajik people's characteristic of mutual understanding in life. The ceremony is held in the family of the upcoming wedding. If the host family wants to hold the wedding, they must obtain the consent of the relatives and friends who have died. If the relatives and friends agree, they will beat the hand drum to indicate that they will kill sheep to entertain the relatives and friends who have died during the drum ceremony. The Tajik people believe in the Ismaili sect of Shia Islam, which is unique in my country. This also makes the music, dance, clothing, and food culture of the Tajik people have distinctive characteristics, which are specifically reflected in the Tajik wedding customs. For example, the music in the wedding does not use large instruments, but mainly eagle flutes and hand drums, creating a joyful atmosphere with strong ethnic characteristics; the bride's clothes are not only colorful, but also have many decorations, showing the characteristics of the plateau ethnic group. In the Tajik wedding, whether it is the groom, the bride, the best man, or the bridesmaid, they all have to paint their faces with more than 60 white dots to indicate auspiciousness, which is rare among other ethnic minorities in Xinjiang. The Tajik wedding lasts for three days. During this process, there is always a joyful, harmonious, and warm atmosphere, which makes every participant intoxicated. The Tajik wedding customs have a long history and rich cultural connotations, and have research value in folklore, aesthetics, ethnology, sociology, and religion.
