The Zhuang three-part folk song has a long history and is mainly popular in the Zhuang area at the junction of Mashan, Shanglin and Xincheng counties in Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region. Among them, Guzhai Township, Jiafang Township, Lidang Township and Guling Town in the east of Mashan County are densely distributed. The Zhuang people call it "Sandunhuan" or "Santiaohuan". There is a record in history books that "the Zhuang people sing in unison, with sad and sentimental feelings. They are all self-composed and cannot be copied. Among them, there are excellent ones." The Zhuang three-part folk song is sung in the life, production, love, weddings, funerals and music gods of the Zhuang society. The content mainly reflects the cultural characteristics of the Zhuang people's life, production, customs and habits, and expresses the Zhuang people's understanding and pursuit of a better life. According to scholars' inference, the Zhuang three-part folk song first appeared in the Tang and Song Dynasties, prevailed in the Ming and Qing Dynasties, and is still sung at the junction of Mashan and Shanglin counties. The Zhuang three-part folk song expresses the Zhuang people's worship and belief in the universe and nature, and praises the hardworking and brave working people. The Zhuang three-part folk song consists of three parts. The first and second parts representing the main melody are sung by the lead singer, and the third part is sung by two or more chorus members. The first and second parts have independent tones, and the third part is a foil harmony. The independence and perfect combination of the three parts of the three-part folk song are rare in folk songs at home and abroad. The Zhuang three-part folk song is a precious folk cultural heritage of the Mashan Zhuang people in Guangxi, and is the crystallization of the Zhuang people's labor production emotions and cultural wisdom for thousands of years. Its discovery fills the gap that there are no polyphonic folk songs among the eastern ethnic minorities. In November 2000, after interviewing the Mashan Zhuang three-part folk song, a reporter from the Southern Daily commented in the newspaper: Guangxi folk songs are the best in the country, and Mashan folk songs are the best in Guangxi. With the frequent performances of the three-part folk song, the news media has reported vigorously and given it a very high evaluation. Over the years, the Zhuang three-part folk songs have participated in many large-scale performances such as the Nanning International Folk Song Art Festival, and have been performed in more than ten countries including Japan, South Korea, Egypt, and Finland, where they have been well received.
