🎧  Listen to Introduction

The human dragon dance in Dongshan Village, Dongshan Town, Donghai Island, Guangdong Province is known as the "unique in the East". During the performance, dozens to hundreds of young adults and teenagers all wear shorts and connect their bodies to form a "long dragon". Amid the deafening gongs and drums and the blasting of horns, the dragon's head is high, its body is tumbling, and its tail is swinging vigorously, just like a dragon going out to sea, overwhelming and unstoppable, showing a unique island color and a strong local flavor. It is an important part of the enduring folk customs and large-scale square entertainment activities of Donghai Island and even Leizhou Peninsula. During the Spring Festival, Lantern Festival, Mid-Autumn Festival and some major festive holidays, Dongshan Village must dance the "human dragon" for several nights in a row. Every household on the east and west streets is decorated with lights and colors, and every family comes out in droves, with a huge flow of people and a lively atmosphere. According to legends by artists, the human dragon dance began around the end of the Ming Dynasty. The Ming army, which was defeated by the Qing army, retreated to the Leizhou Peninsula and Donghai Island. It was the Mid-Autumn Festival, and local people choreographed this dance to boost the morale of the Ming army. Since then, the human dragon dance has spread here and reached its peak during the Qianlong and Jiaqing periods of the Qing Dynasty. The human dragon dance is a product of the special social and historical factors and regional natural conditions of the Donghai Island. It integrates various customs of the ancient island people such as entertaining dragons, respecting dragons, offering sacrifices to the sea, respecting ancestors, and worshipping gods into the "human dragon", forming a self-created and unique dragon dance performance form and "human dragon" spirit. Zhanjiang human dragon dance has unique performance routines such as raising the dragon, nodding the dragon, flying through the clouds, and tornado waves. The performers have mastered the steady movements and steps of quickly carrying people on their shoulders. The formation is smooth and changeable, and the movements are done in one go. It is dynamic from a distance and rugged and majestic from a close distance. It has become an important part of the extension and development of Chinese dragon culture. With the changing times, the human dragon dance has gradually lost its former appeal and is in a state of decline. In order to protect the folk cultural heritage, it is necessary to rescue and organize it as soon as possible.
