"Climbing the knife ladder", also known as climbing the knife mountain, is an ancient folk activity aimed at exorcising evil spirits and eliminating disasters, and praying for peace. "Climbing the knife ladder" is popular in Qilin Village, Taiping Town, Mazhang District, Zhanjiang City. Qilin Village is located in the northeast of Leizhou Peninsula, 33 kilometers away from Zhanjiang City, and is close to the east bank of the lower reaches of Tongming Bay. The ancestor of Leizhou, Chen Dalun, built a village and lived here in the late Ming Dynasty. A temple was built to worship Zhang Xingwu Hou Shuai Shangdi. Every year on the eleventh and twelfth day of the second lunar month, this "annual ceremony" has a history of more than 400 years. Its main contents include parading gods, walking in sedan chairs, climbing knife ladders, and crossing the sea of fire. Among them, "climbing knife ladders" is a unique project, that is, erecting a symmetrical wooden ladder 18 meters high on the flat ground, and 36 sharp and shining steel knives are tied diagonally on both sides of the wooden ladder, which is called "knife ladder". Barefoot and bare-handed performers, grasping the blades in their hands and stepping on the green blades, climb to the top of the knife ladder step by step amid the cheerful sounds of suona, gongs and drums, and firecrackers. The steel knife is extremely sharp, but the performer's hands and feet are not hurt at all. This is a unique folk activity. "Climbing the knife ladder" is one of the solemn and sacred contents of the local people's sacrificial ceremony, which fully demonstrates the piety of the Leizhou people when they worship their ancestors and the sincerity of the Leizhou people when they pray to their ancestors. With the progress and development of the times, "climbing the knife ladder" has become an exciting and fascinating ornamental art. The local people make this activity warm, grand and wonderful every year. It is well-known far and wide and is deeply loved by the Leizhou people. "Climbing the knife ladder" is a folk custom that has gradually evolved in order to promote the spirit of the ancestors who dared to "climb the knife mountain and go down the sea of fire" without fear. Today, the local farmers are more important to inherit and carry forward the fine traditions of their ancestors of unity, love for the village and enterprising through this activity, and inspire future generations to care about their hometown, unite and help each other, be proactive and enterprising, and build a better home.
