Liannan Yao Autonomous County is located in the northwest of the mountainous area in northern Guangdong. The Yao long drum dance is popular in the Pai Yao villages within its territory. The Yao long drum dance was introduced by the ancestors of the Pai Yao when they migrated to Liannan during the Sui and Tang Dynasties. It flourished with the prosperity of the singing hall. The long drum dance is a square festive dance with 36 performance routines, which can be divided into single dance, duet dance, group dance, etc. The more people there are, the more lively the atmosphere. During traditional festivals such as the Spring Festival, March 3, June 6, and October 16, and singing halls, the Pai Yao gather in the open space in front of the village or the fields after harvest, blowing horns, beating gongs, and dancing long drums to celebrate the festival. The dance language of the long drum dance is relatively rich, reflecting the production activities, living customs and religious beliefs of the Pai Yao from all aspects, exquisite costumes, and unique dances. It has high historical research and artistic value. With the progress of human social civilization, the Yao long drum dance has been severely impacted, and it was regarded as a feudal superstitious activity during the Cultural Revolution and was imprisoned for more than ten years. Some long drum dances have been lost, and the sound quality of the long drums is not good. There is a lack of successors, and they are currently in an endangered state. Now only the reunion drum, the twelve surnames drum, the song hall long drum, and the happy drum are relatively well preserved. "Long Drum Dance" won the first prize in the performance project of the first Guangdong Ethnic Games, the second prize in the performance project of the fifth national meeting, and the second prize in the first Guangdong Folk Art Performance Competition. The Yao dance "Big Long Drum Dance" was included in the "Guangdong Volume of the Collection of Chinese Ethnic and Folk Dances". In 1996, the Liannan Yao long drum dance was invited to perform in Singapore, achieving a breakthrough in overseas cultural exchanges. In 1997, Youling New Village was named "Guangdong Ethnic Folk Art (Yao Long Drum Dance) Hometown" by the Guangdong Provincial Department of Culture, and in 2000 it was named "Chinese Folk Art (Yao Long Drum Dance) Hometown" by the Ministry of Culture. Liannan Yao's "Long Drum Dance Youhai Song" participated in the opening ceremony of the 2006 Guangdong International Tourism and Culture Festival with a lineup of more than 500 people. In 2007, "Long Drum Dance You Hai Ge" was selected as one of the programs of the Guangdong Military and Civilian Spring Festival Gala.
