The "Tofu Festival" is a unique folk activity in the Lantern Festival custom of the Lin clan in Shegangxia Village, Gaogang Town, Fogang County. According to the elders of the Lin clan, the origin of the Tofu Festival is about 1609 AD. On the 13th day of the first lunar month of that year, when the villagers of the Lin clan were lighting lanterns in the ancestral hall and eating vegetarian food, a villager accidentally spilled tofu on another villager, which caused a tofu fight. The following year, the villagers who participated in the tofu fight of the previous year had another male child. The villagers believed that the tofu fight brought prosperity to the population. Since then, the Dingtou has organized a tofu fight when lighting lanterns in the ancestral hall on the 13th day of the first lunar month every year. It has now developed into a tofu festival in which all the young and old in the village participate. The "Tofu Festival" first opens a new Ding meeting on the eighth or ninth day of the first lunar month, organized by the Dingtou (the first male born in the year is the first Ding, and his father is the Dingtou). Before the 13th day of the first lunar month is the lantern of this year, and after the 13th day of the first lunar month is the lantern of next year. The task of the new Ding meeting is to collect funds needed for the Tofu Festival and arrange matters related to the Tofu Festival. In the past, all expenses were raised by the families who participated in the new Dinghui, but now they also accept donations from other villagers. In the past, they made tofu themselves, but later they ordered tofu when they were not enough. The lanterns for lighting the lanterns are purchased from other villages. Four lanterns are purchased every year, and they are decorated by themselves after they are bought back. The four lanterns are lit up on three days and hung in three ancestral halls and private incense burners respectively. After the lanterns are bought, they are placed at the Dingtou’s house, and everything is under the Dingtou’s responsibility. The time for collectively receiving lanterns on the thirteenth day of the first lunar month is around noon, and the lanterns are lit from 2 pm to 0 pm. When going to the Dingtou’s house to take the lanterns out, gongs and drums must be beaten. The lanterns of the Lin’s ancestral hall are hung first, and then the lanterns of the private incense burners are hung. After welcoming the lanterns, the tofu must be transported over. After the lanterns are welcomed, the lamp holder will take the lanterns into the ancestral hall and hang them up. Firecrackers will be set off while the gongs and drums are beaten. Offerings must also be brought: double candles, chickens, pork, incense, etc. Then, on the 13th day of the first lunar month, they will play tofu fighting at 0 pm, then light private lanterns, and then go back to the ancestral hall to eat (in the past, the elders, people who had children, and people who played gongs and drums in the village would eat there, but now anyone who wants to go can go; they used to eat vegetarian food, but now they can eat meat). On the 14th day of the first lunar month, they will hang lanterns in the second ancestral hall, and on the 15th day of the first lunar month, they will hang lanterns in the third ancestral hall, and drink Ding wine at around 5 pm on the same day (it used to be paid by the Dingtou, but later it was paid by the remaining funds). When putting up new lanterns, the old lanterns must be taken down. Shegangxia (Shigangxia) has always had the habit of planting beans and making tofu. The utensils used in the Tofu Festival include lanterns (bought and decorated by themselves), tofu, gongs and drums, and sacrificial supplies. The gongs and drums percussion used in the Tofu Festival are the percussion rhythms of traditional Cantonese opera in the past. The elders in the village introduced the name of the tune of this percussion music as Chongdiantou.
