Southwest Shandong drum and wind music is a kind of folk instrumental music with suona as the main instrument. It is represented by Jiaxiang drum and wind music, which is mainly distributed in Jining, Zaozhuang and Heze, Shandong Province and surrounding areas. Southwest Shandong drum and wind music mainly depends on folk activities such as festivals, weddings and funerals. According to traditional customs, the folks will use a suona as the main instrument, and the other instruments such as flute, sheng, small cymbals, and drums are called "single big flute" (suona, commonly known as big flute in the local area); the two suonas are mainly played, and the other instruments are small cymbals, cloud gongs, Wang gongs, music drums, etc. are called "pairs of big flutes". In addition, there are bands with tin flutes as the main instrument and "Kaxi" bands. Representative pieces include "Hundred Birds Paying Homage to the Phoenix", "Six Words Opening the Door", "One Flower", "Big Combination", "Wind Stirring Snow", "Carrying the Flower Sedan", etc., with a total of more than 300 pieces; representative performers include Ren Tongxiang, Jia Ruiqi, Yuan Ziwen, Wei Yongtang, etc., and representative music groups in Jiaxiang County alone include the "Yang Family Group" represented by Yang Xingyun, the "Cao Family Group" represented by Cao Ruiqi, the "Ren Family Group" represented by Ren Tongxiang, the "Zhao Family Group" represented by Zhao Xingyu, and the "Jia Family Group" represented by Jia Chuanxiu. Among them, the performance style of the Yang Family Group is simple and elegant, solemn and dignified; the timbre of the Cao Family Group is pure, soft and sweet; the timbre of the Ren Family Group is bright and delicate; the timbre of the Zhao Family Group is broad, high and bright; the timbre of the Jia Family Group is crisp and exciting. For a period of time, these five major groups led other drum music inheritors to be active in the local folk social life, competing with each other for excellence, and each leading the way, which was deeply loved by the people, and made Jiaxiang a well-known "hometown of suona" throughout China. The style of Southwest Shandong drum music is unique, simple and bold, high-pitched and passionate, with high artistic value, and is loved by experts and the general public. Southwest Shandong drum music, a widely popular folk art, has been greatly improved in all aspects after long-term excavation, sorting and promotion by professional cultural workers.
