Jinbei drum music: a wind and percussion music popular in Wutai, Dingxiang, Yuanping, Xinxian, and Jingle in northern Shanxi. According to historical records, at the end of the Qin Dynasty, a group of people moved to Loufan (now Jingle County in northwest Shanxi) to escape the war, lived on herding, and became rich. "They went out hunting, played drums and blew them, and used their wealth to dominate the border." (See "Ten Thousand Surnames" and "Dictionary of People's Names") It is difficult to verify whether today's Jinbei drum music is a relic of more than 2,000 years ago, but drum music was popular in western and northern Shanxi as early as the Qin and Han Dynasties, which shows that its history is quite long. The class that plays drum music is called "drum room" or "drum class", which is also called "eight-tone club" by modern people. Almost every village has it. The most commonly played pieces include the "Eight Great Sets", "Great Victory", "Beating Sour Jujubes", "Visiting the Girl", "Mao Nu Watching Lanterns" and other Sanqu. The "Eight Great Sets" is a series of its own, which is the general name of the eight great sets of "Blue Sky Set", "Dressing Table Set", "Pushing the Axle Set", "Twelve-story Building Set", "Scolding the Fisherman Set", "Proverbs Set", "Elang Set" and "Persuading the Golden Cup Set". Each set of songs is composed of multiple tunes in a fixed order, with the "gradual development" of speed as the main line, and the same ending is used to run through the tunes. The main instrument for playing the "Eight Great Sets" is the horn, accompanied by the sheng, the sea flute, the flute (among which "Scolding the Fisherman Set" is played only with the suona), and the percussion instruments include drums, small cymbals, large cymbals, large gongs, cloud gongs, bangzi, etc. Among the "Eight Great Sets", except for the Proverbs Set which is used exclusively for funerals, the other seven sets are mostly used in weddings, funerals, festivals, community fire temple fairs and other occasions. The music is full of rural flavor, beautiful and simple, lively and enjoyable to listen to. The large-scale suite "Da De Sheng" is another type of drum music in northern Shanxi. It is free and flexible in the selection and sequence of tunes, and is full of improvisation when playing. It can better adapt to the needs of various occasions in folk customs.
