Cloth appliqués are made of coarse cloth, which is directly dyed with bagged dyes at high temperature into various colors and cut and pasted by skillful women. Yanchuan County, named "National Modern Folk Art Painting Town" by the Ministry of Culture, is located in the hinterland of the Loess Plateau and on the bank of the Yellow River east of Yan'an. Influenced by the Ordos grassland and the mutual penetration of Mongolian and Han folk art, its traditional folk art has a unique charm. Based on the local traditional folk paper-cutting, embroidery, murals, and cloth appliqué crafts, Yanchuan people start from life, use local materials, use cloth pieces of different colors, textures, and shapes, and create cloth appliqués with a sense of relief through cloth sewing and patchwork. The so-called cloth sewing is a large-scale collage, including patching, stitching, inlaying and splicing; the so-called patchwork is a small-area floral pattern embellishment, that is, a piece of cloth with cloth patterns is pasted, sewn, and inlaid on a piece of base cloth.
