Taihu Quzi Opera is an ancient opera that is popular in Taihu County. Because of the local custom of calling it singing songs, it was named Taihu Quzi Opera in the 1980s. Taihu Quzi Opera originated from Yiyang Opera brought by immigrants in the Ming Dynasty and has the characteristic of "noisy". Songs are sung in festive events (such as moving to a new house, giving birth to a boy, birthday celebrations, promotion, and admission to school, etc.), and there are also activities of singing songs in festival customs (such as Ping'an Society Offering and Lantern Festival). Singing songs also exists in the funeral activities of the elderly. Taihu Quzi Opera is divided into two forms: singing in a drum-surrounded seat and singing on the move. There are usually 58 people in a seated singing. Each person holds an instrument, led by a drum board master, singing in dialect, and everyone sings and joins. The main instruments are small gongs, large gongs, cymbals, cymbals, tooth boards, drums (flat drums, hall drums), horse gongs, etc. Before starting to sing, a stage must be set up, which can be led by suona. The singers are generally men with a certain cultural foundation. After liberation, with the improvement of women's status, women also play the corresponding roles. When singing in a seated position, they do not wear makeup. When singing on the move, they wear makeup according to the role, hold the corresponding props, and are accompanied by a band. There are more people. The singing content is mostly happy songs. Some of them contain content related to the five major southern operas and Mulian Opera. The existing Quzi opera troupes are mainly loosely combined. They gather when there is an event and disperse after singing. There are roughly two types of Quzi opera troupes: peasant troupes and Taoist troupes. Peasant troupes mainly focus on self-entertainment and New Year's entertainment activities. They have no fixed income and are more flexible in inheritance. Taoist troupes mainly focus on funeral activities and religious activities such as Ping'an Shejiao. They have a relatively stable income, so they are mainly inherited by family. Due to economic globalization and changes in social trends, the environment for the performance and inheritance of Taihu Quzi Opera has been affected and is in an endangered state. To this end, Taihu County has taken a series of measures to protect this ancient artistic heritage so that it can play an active role in the construction of a harmonious Taihu Lake.
