Maotanchang Town is located at the southern end of Jin'an District, Lu'an City, Anhui Province. The production of "Dahongpao Oil-paper Umbrella" began in the 13th year of Daoguang in the Qing Dynasty (1833). The Maotanchang Dahongpao Oil-paper Umbrella Shop is located in the Ming and Qing Old Street of Maotanchang Town. The workshop is called "Chengguzhai" and the shop is called "Xu Tianyuan Umbrella Shop". The owner Xu Xiusheng has been hand-making and operating Dahongpao Oil-paper Umbrellas for more than 60 years. Xu Ji brand Dahongpao Oil-paper Umbrella is a kind of umbrella with cotton paper coated with original ecological tung oil as the umbrella surface. According to its structural structure, it can be divided into umbrella handle, upper and lower baskets, long bones, inch bones, umbrella paper paste, tung oil, and umbrella top. The umbrella frame is nan bamboo (i.e. moso bamboo), and the umbrella surface is waterproof tung oil cotton paper; according to the specifications, it can be divided into diameters of 84 cm, 70 cm, and 50 cm (other specifications are also available). In addition to being a daily necessity for sheltering from rain and sun, it is also an indispensable item in wedding customs and etiquette. At traditional local weddings, when the bride gets out of the sedan chair, the bridesmaid will use a red oil-paper umbrella to cover the bride to ward off evil spirits.
