Sichuan Opera Drum
Sichuan opera drumming has been popular among the people of Mengyang since the Qing Dynasty; the wealthy families in the town even built a stage in their own courtyards, and invited the drumming troupe to perform at home during festivals and weddings. According to the "Peng County Chronicles": In 1922, Wang Jicheng, the leader of the Pao brothers in the town, established the local Sichuan opera troupe Jinlanke Society, and the drumming activities in Mengyang were further developed. Jinlanke Society also became the cradle of the artistic career of Sichuan opera master Yang Youhe. Yang Youhe, who was born and raised in Mengyang, entered Jinlanke Society to study Sichuan opera at the age of 8. Since then, he has devoted his life to the performance art of Sichuan opera female roles. He is unique in inheriting traditions and reforming and innovating, and has made outstanding contributions to the development of drumming art, and has also played an important role in the rise of Mengyang Sichuan opera. Mengyang people not only appreciate drumming as an art, but also participate in it as a culture and life. In the 11th year of Jiaqing, the Guoyou Players Association, which consisted of 38 people, was established. This was the first Sichuan Opera Players Association in Mengyang's history. Since then, the Sichuan Opera activities in Mengyang have formed a situation of parallel development of troupe performances and folk singing, which has continued to this day. After the founding of New China, under the care of the Party and the government, Mengyang's drum-playing Sichuan Opera culture has been further developed. Watching Sichuan Opera and learning to sing Sichuan Opera once became the main spiritual and cultural life of the people. At that time, there were as many as 8 Sichuan Opera performance venues in the town, including Wanshou Palace, Chuanwang Palace, Taiping Temple, Fujian Guild Hall, Huguang Guild Hall, etc., and drum-playing singing was even more common in all teahouses in the town. After the reform and opening up, Mengyang has been prosperous and colorful. The Sichuan Opera culture has not only attracted a large number of audiences, but also attracted many Sichuan Opera enthusiasts from surrounding areas to participate. The Mengyang Women's Sichuan Opera Troupe and Women's Face-changing Performances cultivated by the Mengyang Players Association are unique and charming. Mengyang Town, located in the southeast of Pengzhou City, Sichuan Province, has a long history and rich cultural heritage. It was established as Mengzhou in the early Sui Dynasty, changed to Mengyang County in the first year of Tianbao in the Tang Dynasty, and became Meng County under Yizhou in the second year of Emperor Gaozong's Yifeng. Later, it was incorporated into the jurisdiction of Pengzhou. It was established as Mengyang Town in the tenth year of Hongwu in the Ming Dynasty. Mengyang is 26 kilometers away from Chengdu City and only 3 kilometers away from the Sanxingdui Ruins in Guanghan. In the 1950s and 1980s, more than 40 bronze sacrificial ritual vessels from the Shang Dynasty were excavated here twice, which are national first-class protected cultural relics. The Sichuan Opera Friends Activities in Mengyang extend the orthodox Sichuan Opera stage performance art to folk cultural activities, and have made positive efforts to popularize and develop Sichuan Opera art. In this strong Sichuan Opera cultural atmosphere, people satisfy their entertainment needs through the appreciation and singing of Sichuan Opera, pour out their emotions, show their talents, and enjoy some spiritual satisfaction that cannot be obtained on the stage of life, so as to achieve harmony between people and society in their hearts. This folk-rooted Weigu culture has brought countless joy and enjoyment to the people of Mengyang, and has played a positive role in their aesthetic tastes, living habits, and even their spiritual outlook and ideology. The formation of Mengyang Weigu culture also has important cultural value for studying the influence of opera art on folk cultural activities.
