Naxi clothing

🎧  Listen to Introduction

According to relevant historical records, the costumes of the Naxi ancestors had the custom of "both men and women wore sheepskin", which may be related to the relatively developed animal husbandry and the nature of nomadic people. Most of the Naxi men seen by Li Jing of the Yuan Dynasty were "good at fighting and hunting, holding short knives, and wearing giant clams as ornaments", while women "wore felt, black clothes, bare feet, and high buns; women cut their hair to eyebrows and used hemp ropes as skirts." By the end of the Qing Dynasty and the beginning of the Republic of China, the costumes of Naxi men were roughly the same as those of Han men, and the costumes of women had changed from wearing skirts to wearing more trousers, but still retained more distinct ethnic characteristics. Women in the Lijiang area wore wide-waisted and large-sleeved, short-front and long-back trimmed jackets, plus purple or yellow waistcoats, pleated aprons around the waist, long trousers, boat-shaped embroidered shoes, and a sheepskin shawl with seven round cloth circles and seven pairs of hanging tassels on the back, commonly known as "wearing stars and moonlight." Married women put their hair in a bun on top of their heads and wear a round gauze hat; unmarried girls put their hair in a braid and wear a cloth scarf or a small black velvet hat. Naxi women in Zhongdian County and Deqin County of Yunnan Province often wear a long linen gown with a collar and a front opening with colorful patterns on the upper body, a linen skirt with many pleats on the lower body, a ribbon around the waist, a sheepskin shawl on the back, and cloud-shaped boots on the feet. Young women generally like to keep their hair long, mix colorful silk or wool threads into their braids and put them in a bun on top of their heads, which is similar to the headdresses of Tibetan women in neighboring areas; while married women often wrap their heads with red cloth and wear a disc-shaped silver ornament commonly known as "bone matching".
