Tengchong peasant paintings were created and formed in mass painting activities in the 1970s. They are in the same vein as my country's traditional folk art and handicrafts such as paper-cutting, dough sculptures, clay figurines, shadow puppets, window decorations, board paintings, and New Year paintings. Their overall artistic level is no less than that of the famous Jinshan and Huxian peasant paintings in my country. Tengchong peasant paintings are created by ethnic minorities such as Dai, Lisu, and Wa. They have very distinct ethnic characteristics. Many of their works have participated in national exhibitions and won awards, hundreds of their works have been exhibited in the province, more than ten have been exhibited abroad and collected, and many of their works have been published in national and provincial publications; nearly 100 people have been commended and rewarded by the state and provinces (cities). Tengchong peasant paintings are good at extracting themes from folk art and real life; using a unique vision, they discover the inner beauty of things that people are accustomed to, and then use simple, natural and intuitive painting language to depict pictures with diverse styles, wide range of themes, full composition, and rich colors. The works are sophisticated in brushwork and profound in meaning, full of a strong sense of life, distinct characteristics of the times and regional features. They reflect the thoughts, feelings, aesthetic pursuits and spiritual outlook of farmers in the new era, and have high artistic appreciation and collection value. In June 2000, the Ministry of Culture awarded Hehua Township, Tengchong County the title of "Hometown of Chinese Folk Characteristic Art (Peasant Painting)".
