Birch bark crafting

Heilongjiang
🎧  Listen to Introduction

The birch bark craft is a unique handicraft of the northern hunting ethnic groups in my country, with strong ethnic characteristics and regional characteristics. This skill is circulated in the Oroqen Autonomous Banner, Ewenki Autonomous Banner, Molidawa Daur Autonomous Banner, Ergun Left Banner (Genhe City) and the Heilongjiang River Basin in Inner Mongolia. The ancient northern hunting and nomadic peoples such as Donghu, Xiongnu, Xianbei, Khitan, and Jurchen all had a pottery-making era, while the Oroqen, Ewenki, Daur, and Mongolian ethnic groups had no pottery-making history. The birch bark utensils created by the Oroqen, Ewenki, and Daur replaced pottery and porcelain in production and life, reflecting the cultural characteristics of forest hunting ethnic groups. Birch bark has good waterproof and corrosion resistance. The utensils made from it are light, easy to carry, and not easy to break. They are the favorite production tools and daily necessities of hunting ethnic groups. It has various forms and shapes, mainly including boats, baskets, boxes, boxes, bowls, etc. These utensils are made of birch bark sewn with animal tendons and horsetail ropes, and are engraved with various patterns and designs. They are not only important utensils, but also exquisite works of art. The traditional birch bark processing technique has four steps: the first is to peel the bark; the second is to soak or boil the skin to soften it; the third is to cut and sew it; and the fourth is to decorate with patterns. The decorative techniques include pounding and pressing, and there are also clipping and pasting. All ethnic groups decorate birch bark products with patterns that symbolize auspiciousness, happiness, peace, and harvest. With the development of society, the production and living styles of hunting ethnic groups have undergone tremendous changes. The hunting culture has gradually declined, and the birch bark making skills have also gradually declined. In view of the extremely important significance of protecting this skill, measures should be formulated and implemented as soon as possible.
