🎧  Listen to Introduction

The ancient locust tree is a historical landmark in Lei Village, Baishui County. Like Wulong Mountain, it has many legends. The ancient locust tree is located next to the flood pond in Tongdao Village, about five miles northeast of Wulong Mountain. This ancient locust tree is about two feet high and so thick that two people cannot hug it. There is a hollow inside the tree, which can accommodate four people to sit around the table for tea. The treetops are flat and tender, with dense leaves and shade. In the middle is a branch as thick as a bowl, hanging low to the ground. It is windy and rainy all year round and never decays. The entire flood pond is covered in a shade of trees. The water in the flood pond is not frozen in winter and not rotten in summer. It is like a hot spring in all seasons. One summer, there was thunder and lightning, and the ancient locust tree was electrocuted and caught fire. The flames and smoke were soaring into the sky that people went to rescue it, but they were caught off guard. As a result, it died without rescue, which is even more magical. Legend has it that during the reign of Emperor Ruizong of the Tang Dynasty, a princess died unjustly and was buried in Qiaoling. The princess's wronged soul is still there, and there are cries and howling at night. People nearby are very uneasy and very scared. Fengshan is a desolate wilderness, and no one dares to work here. Duke Jingde was here to suppress evil. Once when Jingde passed by Tongdao Village, he saw this strange tree and could not help but stop his horse to look at it. He was amazed at how big this locust tree was. Two girls went to the pond to wash clothes and asked Jingde, "Why did you come here? Did you take the wrong path?" Jingde said, "Jingde, stop your horse to look at the ancient locust tree. I don't know how many generations it has." After saying that, he left. Later, people built a temple next to the ancient locust tree. The ancient locust tree is known as a longevity tree, and people often burn incense and pray for peace.
