The ancient gourd harp, made of wood, is actually the evolution of the melon harp. The story shows that the ancient gourd harp and its dance have a long history. The Miao Ancient Gourd Dance is a dance in which men play the gourd harp to accompany women dancing. The basic movements of the ancient gourd dance are that several men dance while playing the ancient gourd harp in front, and women step on the dots of the ancient gourd harp, put their hands on their chests and swing up and down in a circle, twisting their waists, shaking their hips, turning around, etc. There are three-step, four-step, and five-step basic movements. The four-step dance has a brisk rhythm and changes with four steps and one turn. The five-step dance is shaped like a circle, and walks back and forth, steps forward, and retreats with stamping feet, sometimes dispersing and sometimes gathering. The ancient gourd dance contains lyrics and music. The ancient gourd lyrics are composed of two parts: "singing lyrics" and "lyrics". "Singing lyrics" means that each ancient gourd song has oral lyrics, or it is called "oral reading of the score". The ancient gourd music is played by two strings with different high and low voices combined with a chorus combination to unify the rhythm's speed, strength, etc. The tunes include: Calling Girl Tune, Starting Tune, and Sending Girl Tune. The ancient gourd dance mainly uses the changes of 3, 4, and 5 steps to obtain the characteristics of simplicity and purity. It has the public value of Miao mate selection and the research value of national music and national social culture. On May 24, 2021, it was approved by the State Council to be included in the fifth batch of national intangible cultural heritage representative projects.
