Cultivation Techniques of Chongming Narcissus

Shanghai
🎧  Listen to Introduction

Narcissus has always been a treasure among flowers that people love. In my country, Chongming narcissus and Zhangzhou narcissus are the most famous. They come from the same source and form the two major strains of Chinese narcissus. Chongming narcissus has a history of more than 500 years of cultivation. The geographical conditions of Chongming Island are very suitable for the growth of narcissus. As early as the Zhengde period of the Ming Dynasty (1506-1521), the ancestors of Chongming began to plant narcissus in front of and behind their houses. At that time, they were not deliberately used for viewing and smelling. People mainly cut the narcissus bulbs and dipped the yarn in its sticky juice to make the yarn harder after drying. In the early 1930s, Chongming people began to systematically cultivate narcissus and sold it as an ornamental flower to Shanghai, Nanjing, Beijing and Southeast Asia, and it gradually became famous. In the long-term practice of cultivating Chongming daffodils, Chongming people have formed a unique set of Chongming daffodil cultivation techniques through continuous exploration: first, flat, easy-to-drain, loose and fertile land should be selected; second, the selection and castration of bulbs should be emphasized; third, planting should be carried out according to the requirements of the three-year life of daffodils; fourth, special field management should be carried out, including weeding, fertilization, irrigation and drainage, bud pulling, removal of side buds and removal of scapes during flowering; fifth, post-harvest management of bulbs; and finally, the daffodil bulbs should be cultivated to bloom, with double petals, long flowering period, upright scapes and strong fragrance. Chongming daffodils have now become one of the top ten famous flowers in China and the only local specialty flower in Shanghai that has obtained the geographical indication of agricultural products.
