Suiyang bamboo mats are represented by Suiyang Wangcao handmade bamboo mats. Wangcao Town is located in the north of Suiyang County, Zunyi City, Guizhou Province. It is the place where Yin Zhen, a great Confucian teacher and educator of the Eastern Han Dynasty, taught for 15 years and spread the culture of the Central Plains. It is named the hometown of calligraphy and painting by the Guizhou Provincial Department of Culture, and it is also a well-known hometown of handmade bamboo mat weaving. Suiyang Wangcao bamboo mats enjoy a high reputation in Guizhou and even the whole country because of their inheritance from generation to generation, unique skills and exquisite weaving. The bamboo mat weaving skills have been passed down since the Ming and Qing Dynasties, and it has a history of more than 400 years. Wangcao handmade bamboo mats, represented by the Zhang family of Guanghuai Village, Wangcao Town, have represented Guizhou in the national Canton Fair bamboo products exhibition three times in 1914 (the third year of the Republic of China), 1966, and 1993, and have won high honors; in 2006, the bamboo mats won the first prize of the Suiyang County 2006 "Colorful Guizhou" Tourism Commodity Skilled Craftsmen Selection Competition and the 2006 "Kailin Cup" Colorful Guizhou Commodity Production Skilled Craftsmen "Zunyi Famous Craftsman" Excellence Award. Suiyang Wangcao bamboo mats, also known as green bamboo mats, have created a unique bamboo mat weaving technique in long-term production and life practices. Because they use local high-quality fishing bamboo, they are woven by hand through more than ten processes including selecting bamboo strips, cutting bamboo strips, washing bamboo strips, cutting bamboo strips, opening bamboo strips, drying bamboo strips, weaving bamboo strips, wrapping bamboo strips, and folding bamboo strips. They have distinct regional characteristics, and handmade bamboo mats in other regions cannot compare with them. Selecting bamboo strips means selecting bamboo strips, that is, selecting bamboo. When selecting bamboo, use a machete to cut off the bamboo you like in the bamboo forest. Selecting bamboo is very important. One of the unique features of Wangcao bamboo mat is that it uses one-year-old fishing bamboo with a diameter of about 35 cm that grows locally, because old bamboo strips lack flexibility and young bamboo strips lack toughness, which are not ideal. Another major advantage of this kind of bamboo is that the distance between bamboo nodes is long, which makes it easy to start and weave. The best time to select bamboo strips and weave is generally between April and May and September and October of the lunar calendar. The length of the bamboo material is determined according to the width of the bamboo mat, which is generally four feet wide and six feet long. Washing bamboo strips, also known as washing bamboo, is to wash the bamboo strips with water to keep them green and smooth. Splitting the bamboo strips, use a knife to split the bamboo strips, first into bamboo blocks (bamboo blocks), then split the bamboo blocks into bamboo slices (bamboo slices), and finally split the bamboo slices into bamboo threads (bamboo threads). The second unique feature of Wangcao bamboo mat is that a 3 cm wide bamboo slice (bamboo slice) can be evenly split into 10 bamboo threads (bamboo threads), and those with superb skills can reach 11 to 12 bamboo threads. Splitting the bamboo strips generally takes 34 days. Thinning the bamboo strips, also known as thinning bamboo threads, bamboo threads, and bamboo strips, is to thin the thinned bamboo strips layer by layer. The shortest time for thinning the bamboo strips is 34 days. The knife used for thinning the bamboo strips is very special and exquisite. It is a special bamboo knife made of wood. Generally, a bamboo thread is thinned into 4 layers, each layer thinner than the previous one, so that it can achieve a soft and shiny level. The first, second and third layers are not needed and should be removed. The fourth layer (i.e. the pure green bamboo layer) is used. When the last layer, i.e. the pure green bamboo layer, is opened, the bamboo strips are wrapped with bamboo shoot shells, and one end is used to bite the bamboo strips with the mouth to tear them open, that is, tearing and opening at the same time. This is a difficult process. When it reaches this level, the bamboo strips are as thin as cicada wings, and can reflect the shadow of a person and can pass the sun. This is the third unique feature of Wangcao bamboo mats. Dry the bamboo strips, hang the opened bamboo strips (bamboo strips) on the rack to dry or cool them, in preparation for making mats. The best time for drying the bamboo strips is about 1 hour. If it is too long, the moisture evaporates too much, the bamboo strips are too dry, and they are not soft, and they cannot maintain their original shape. Weaving the bamboo strips, i.e. making mats, weave bamboo mats with sun-dried or cool-dried bamboo strips. Before making bamboo mats, the dried bamboo strips are first "re-wetted" (i.e., put them on the ground to re-wet and re-humidify them, so that they become soft, unbroken, and easy to make). The process of making bamboo mats alone takes 34 days. When making bamboo mats, the bamboo strips are used in an upside-down manner and added while making them. The bamboo strips are "cut together" and fastened with a wooden ruler knife, so that the protective width of the bamboo mats is uniform and the corners do not fall off. When the bamboo strips are beaten to a certain extent, they are "shaken" (lifted by hand, shaken and stretched), and then continued to be beaten. Making bamboo mats (weaving bamboo strips) can be roughly divided into five steps: starting, beating diagonally, beating long corners, beating small corners, and cutting edges. Wrapping bamboo strips, also known as edge wrapping, is to wrap and modify the beaten bamboo mats to make them beautiful. Folding bamboo strips, also known as folding mats, is to fold the woven bamboo mats. A four-foot wide and six-foot long bamboo mat can be folded into a rectangular block about 20 centimeters long and 13 centimeters wide, or folded into a cylinder about 17 centimeters high and 10 centimeters in diameter. It can be folded into 48 layers and wrapped (rolled) 32 times, and can be put into a small shoulder bag for easy carrying. A four-foot wide and six-foot long bamboo mat requires 150 kilograms of raw bamboo material, but after weaving and processing, it weighs only about 2 kilograms. This is another unique feature of Suiyang Wangcao bamboo mat. When weaving bamboo strips (making mats), short strips are used for the four corners and long strips are used for the rest. To make a high-quality bamboo mat, more than 700 long strips, more than 400 short strips, and more than 1,100 total strips are needed. After the above manual processing and polishing, it takes about 15 days to complete. Suiyang Wangcao bamboo mat is unique. It has many processes such as "selecting bamboo strips, cutting bamboo strips, washing bamboo strips, cutting bamboo strips, opening bamboo strips, drying bamboo strips, weaving bamboo strips, wrapping bamboo strips, and folding bamboo strips". All of them are done by hand. The craftsmanship is unique, exquisite and sophisticated. It is soft and foldable, beautiful and durable, so it has a long-standing reputation. The main inheritors are Zhang Tianfu, Zhang Zhiguang, Zhang Xingtai, Zhang Xuechang, Zhang Jingxue, etc. To this day, the local folk custom of using bamboo mats as dowry when a daughter gets married is still preserved. In this way, after a daughter marries into her husband's family, she will not only have a place to live, wear, eat, but also sleep. The bamboo mat can be used for a long time without deterioration, which means that the daughter will be happy for a lifetime. According to relevant experts, due to the differences in geology, water quality, climate, sunshine and other factors, the Wangcao fishing bamboo growing on the banks of the Furong River contains a large number of various trace elements that are beneficial to the human body. Long-term use of Suiyang Wangcao bamboo mats has health benefits such as lowering blood pressure and refreshing the brain, relaxing muscles and tendons, clearing heat and cooling blood, and prolonging life. It is most suitable for patients with hypertension and cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases, especially for maternal use, which is conducive to the discharge of sewage after uterine contraction and the restoration of health. Suiyang Wangcao bamboo mats play an irreplaceable role in the study of folk handicrafts and have high value in the inheritance, research, development and protection of folk handicrafts.
