The bamboo hats of Wazhai in Sansui County, and the bamboo baskets, sieves, dustpans, baskets and other bamboo products of Bagong are well-known both inside and outside the province, and it has the reputation of "the hometown of bamboo products". The beginning of bamboo weaving in Sansui can be traced back to the late Ming Dynasty and early Qing Dynasty, and it has a history of more than 400 years. The original Wazhai hat had a pointed top and flat eaves, and the materials were coarse and the production was limited. The current Wazhai hat is said to have been improved by an old general named Yang Changjun, who was a maker of Wazhai hats. Yang Changjun was from Wazhai, Sansui, and served as the governor of Shiqian during the Jiaqing period of the Qing Dynasty. After he retired from the army and returned to Hengchong in Wazhai, he settled down and owned more than 100 acres of land. He adapted the hat because it was idle at home; it is also said that during the Jiaqing period of the Qing Dynasty, a man named Huang from Xiaoai, Wazhai, learned the art from Sinan and introduced it. Bamboo weaving has a long history and is a typical representative of folk handicrafts. After a long period of exploration, the bamboo hat has been continuously improved from its appearance to its practical value, from raw material processing to operating technology, from oiling and refining to color matching. It has been changed from a pointed flat eave to a pointed slanted eave to facilitate the smooth flow of rainwater, and the clay model has been changed to a thick bamboo model for easy movement and weaving. The inner tube strips have been changed from coarse to fine, and the outer tube strips have been changed to bamboo silk. The bamboo weaving craft uses water bamboo and nan bamboo as raw materials, which are first broken into coarse and fine strips and tube strips of different thicknesses. The main products include bamboo hats, bamboo baskets, flower baskets, bamboo winnowing baskets, bamboo sieves, fish sieves, dustpans, lunch boxes, bamboo stools, bamboo chairs, bird cages, insect baskets, back baskets, baskets, sun-drying mats, sleeping mats, baking cages, fish reels, and other production and living supplies and tourism and gift craft products. 1. The bamboo hat: the upper part is filled with paper, and the lower part is covered with palm leaves. After the inner and outer tires are combined, the pointed part is dyed black, and then oiled (commonly known as 桄油). First, the "old oil" is used as the base, the "second oil" is used for thickening, and the "tender oil" is used for opening. After drying in the shade, it is ready. Some people also use horse hair instead of palm leaves as a padding, and dye some flowers and plants on the padding paper, which is both beautiful and light and durable. There are many varieties and specifications of bamboo hats. The large diameter is 80 cm, and the small one is 10 cm; at the same time, there are complete sets of bamboo hats, which are divided into a set of 7 tops, a set of 5 tops, and a set of 3 tops, and the diameter of each top differs by 2 cm. The production process is: breaking coarse and fine bamboo strips, leveling bamboo strips, weaving coarse bamboo strips, weaving fine bamboo strips, brushing edges, removing fine bamboo strips, sticking zongzi, pinning tops, dyeing tops, tying edges, 桄油, and finished products. The rules for the coarse and fine strips of bamboo hats: the length of the coarse strips is determined by the size of the bamboo hat, and the width is about 23 mm; the length of the fine strips is determined by the size of the bamboo hat, and the width is about 0.30.5 mm. 2. Bamboo winnowing baskets, bamboo sieves, flower winnowing baskets, and flower sieves: They are mainly produced in the villages of Nanxiao, Bagong Town. The materials of flower winnowing baskets and flower sieves are fine, and the patterns are varied. There is no fixed drawing for the pattern content. The craftsmen design and weave according to customer requirements. For example, the flower winnowing baskets and flower sieves woven by Wu Dezhou in Meimin Village have patterns such as: blessing, wealth, longevity, and joy; longevity, wishes come true, everything goes well, and smooth sailing. The couplets woven for the county general memorial hall were collected by the general's son Yang Zhujiang in Beijing. The finished bamboo sieve has small square holes, which are mostly used to sieve grain; the bamboo winnowing baskets are made of wide and thin strips, and the products are flat and smooth. The production process: breaking the strips, leveling the strips, boiling the strips, weaving the strips, trimming the edges, bundling the edges, flattening, locking the mouth, and the finished product. There is no fixed specification for the strips used for flower winnowing and flower sieves. The specifications of bamboo winnowing and bamboo sieve strips are: the length of the strips is (1535 cm), the width of the strips is about 24 mm, and the colors of the strips are divided into: primary color strips and black strips. The black strips are made by boiling the local balsam leaves in water. This kind of strips can remain black permanently, and will never fade under the sun and rain for a long time. 3. Bamboo basket (fine strip basket): The main material is water bamboo, which is generally the size of a thumb, 4.2 feet long and 1.2 feet short. The diameter of the long and short ones is roughly the same. Mainly use one layer of strips and two layers of strips (i.e. green strips and yellow strips). The finished products of fine bamboo baskets are mainly in different sizes, such as five sets and three sets. In the early 1980s, the three sets were requisitioned by Qiandong Prefecture to participate in the World Expo held in Yunnan. The five sets were requisitioned by the county economic and trade bureau in 2006 and sent to the province to participate in the Huangguoshu Waterfall Festival. The main products are now purchased by Luo Yingen in Kaili and sold inside and outside the province. Its production process: material selection, breaking bamboo strips, bottoming, prying bottom, occupying baskets, inverting bamboo strips, making feet, locking mouth, locking feet, thinning, and finished products. The main bamboo weaving craftsmen include Yang Zaiyin, the first generation of the bamboo hat making craft in Doujie Village, Wazhai, to Yang Zhengqiang, Yang Tongde, Yang Guangyuan, Yang Changliang, Yang Shengde, and Yang Xiujun (it has been passed down for 7 generations, and now passed down to his son Yang Zaize, daughter-in-law Long Yunmei, and daughter Yang Zaiju); Wu Daonan, Tu Zhixiang, and Wu Dezhou, who are in charge of the bamboo winnowing and bamboo sieve making craft in Meimin Village, all inherit the family tradition; the bamboo basket (thin bamboo basket) making craft has been passed down for six generations from Tian Daxian, the first generation, to Tian Zhongyou, Tian Qingyun, Tian Xingjiang, Tian Yingcai, and Tian Jingfu. The Sansui bamboo weaving craft has its unique artistry according to its production process, regional distribution, usage, and inheritance method. Well-made, exquisite workmanship, exquisite and small, beautiful and durable, especially the bamboo hats of Wazhai. During the weaving process, the raw bamboo needs to be broken into coarse and fine strips. The coarse strips are about 2-3 mm, and the fineness of the fine strips reaches 0.30.5 mm. The size of each hole is almost the same. This technology is very difficult in today's bamboo weaving technology. It is very particular and will never fade under the sun and rain for a long time. Craftsmen use black and the color of the bamboo itself to weave various texts, patterns, etc. at will. The bamboo weaving process is complicated. As an important cultural carrier, it contains rich scientific and technological genes and is an extremely valuable historical heritage.
