Shi's dough sculpture is a folk art form that is mainly inherited from the family. It is spread among the Shi family in Chengguan Town, Xingren County, Qianxinan Prefecture, Guizhou Province. According to the Xingren County Chronicles, dough sculpture artist Shi Jiarang "uses dough to make human figures and birds and animals, which are lifelike. During the Anti-Japanese War, the US military was stationed in the county. He used dough to make American figures. The US military felt insulted and wanted to kick his stall. He suddenly had an idea and made a Japanese soldier kneeling and surrendering to the US military. The US military was delighted and regarded it as a treasure and rushed to buy it back to the United States." This incident caused a sensation in Xingren at the time and was widely circulated, which also proved Shi Jiarang's superb skills and extraordinary talents. Due to various traditional folk activities such as sacrifices and "Piaoliangba" used when building beams, there is a relatively large demand for dough sculptures, and the dough sculptures made by Shi Jiarang are exquisite, ingenious, and highly ornamental. Therefore, it is deeply loved by urban and rural people and has become the first choice for people to hold various folk activities. At the same time, due to the good market, dough sculpture making became the capital for Shijiarang to support his family and make a fortune, which was also the fundamental reason why Shijia dough sculpture survived and developed at that time. The raw materials of Shijia dough sculpture are glutinous rice flour and rice flour mixed in a ratio of 2:1. Before the formal production of the works, the kneaded white dough should be mixed with pigments made of natural pigments according to the size of the object to be made, and then kneaded into dough of different colors. The selected pigments are processed from natural plants and are edible. The colors are red, yellow and blue as the basic colors, and can be made into nearly 30 colors through preparation. After the dough is colored, different colors of dough can be used to create according to the characteristics and colors of each part of the object to be made, and rubbing, kneading, pinching, squeezing, pressing, rolling and other techniques are often used. Shijia dough sculpture is rooted in the folk and is used in various folk traditional customs activities of various ethnic groups. The manual craftsmanship is complex and has a long history of being passed down among the people. It has different characteristics and craftsmanship in different eras, reflecting the wisdom of the people. It is not only highly artistic, but also edible. It can be said to be a perfect combination of food and art. For a long time, Shi's dough sculpture has been passed down from generation to generation among the people. Most folk artists use it to support their families. Shi's dough sculpture has been passed down for two generations since Shi Jiarang, and some processes and formulas have become secret skills. However, most members of the family are not very enthusiastic about it. Only Shi Jiarang's four children and grandchildren inherited it. Due to various objective factors, they have not been able to devote themselves to it and develop it. Because it is only passed down in the family, its limitations have caused many process skills to be lost. In addition, affected by personal artistic cultivation and other reasons, Shi's dough sculpture technology is facing a situation where there is no successor.
